Clean Sweep for Microsoft Imagine Cup
School of Information Technology Published on 16 Mar 2018

We've got much to celebrate this week. NYP student teams took all top three spots in the local leg of Microsoft's Imagine Cup. The SEG teams won first and third places while the team from SIT came in second.

ProCubeX: It is outfitted with flashing lights to appeal to children.

The winning project? An interactive and smart learning cube - called ProCubeX - that functions as an early intervention tool for children with dyslexia. The cube works by incorporating elements of interactivity, fun and multi-sensory stimulation to enable children to learn independently. It has varying levels of difficulty to cater to the children's different learning needs.

The happy SIT team with their trophy and invention.

Our students from SIT developed a solution on Microsoft's Hololens (a Mixed Reality Headset). The solution - called HoloMaintenance - simplifies shipping maintenance engineers' corrective and preventive maintenance tasks. This includes coming up with:

  • turn-by-turn indoor navigation to guide the engineer quickly to the equipment site,
  • a virtual hands-free checklist that displays holographic guides and annotations to guide the engineer through a step-by-step instruction of his task, and
  • a ThruView module that allows engineers to view equipment or assets hidden behind structures.

HoloMaintenance is a collaboration with our industry partner Anacle Systems, which provided the backend software solution for the students to integrate into their project.

The third-placed project is one that could help those who are on long-term medication. How? The Smart Pill Bottle or SPiBo helps to alert or remind users to take their medication. Each bottle is designed to contain one particular medication. Details such as prescription type, dosage and scheduled medication time can then be programmed through a mobile application. The mobile app will then prompt and notify users at pre-set timings.
