Our NYP team clinched the championship title at the recent 13th Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition in the D2 Autonomous Category.

Jointly organised by the Defence Science Organisation National Labs (DSO) and Science Centre Singapore, the competition challenged 1,500 participants to innovate and design flying machines.

The team, comprising five students from SEG’s Diploma in Aerospace Systems & Management, was tasked to build a system of two drones that could successfully complete a transportation task in an indoor obstacle course. The team had faced challenges which included difficulties in procuring parts amidst a global computer chip shortage, dealing with a drone crash during the testing phase, and improving the drone system’s performance to mitigate against environmental factors during the actual challenge.

“I’m proud of the students’ fortitude through it all. Their never-say-die attitude has helped them accomplish so much in this competition, and will help them in other areas of their life,” says Gan An Zhi, the lecturer who oversaw the team.

Recent graduate Kek Jing Khai shares his experience: “I am glad that the skills and knowledge gained from my final year project came to good use during the competition. I learnt how to problem solve and troubleshoot issues effectively.”

For their great showing at the competition, the team walks away with a cash prize of $10,000.
