SDM Festival – a student-initiated charity drive

SDM was abuzz! Corridors, labs and other spaces in SDM turned into a hive of activities as students tried out creative art, did game jamming or browsed through art merchandise created by SDM’s budding entrepreneurs.

This student-initiated SDM Festival - organised by the EXCO members of the SDM Club - saw good response, with some 500 staff, students and alumni taking part.

The activities included fun workshops on beading, linocut printing and shrink art (the use of polystyrene plastic to make designs, which are then shrunk under the application of heat into hard plastics). Students also got to design their own merchandise, did sketching sessions or played virtual reality games made by their seniors.

The students also created artwork for sale, such as postcards, stickers and bags. All proceeds went to the NYP Education Fund.

Says EXCO member Bernadette Low, a 3rd year Diploma in Digital Game Art & Design student: “We wanted a carnival with various activities, which must be innovative and also fun. We researched on social media to see what sort of creative arts were trending.”

In the lead up to this event, the Club EXCO spent many days of their June vacation working with student volunteers.

Says SDM Manager Lum Mei Leng: “This was SDM’s first physical event since COVID-19 started in 2020, so our students were very excited. They'd put in a lot of effort as they really wanted to do a good festival. They also learnt many new skills: one of which is learning to ‘train the trainers,’ as they had to teach their peers how to run the workshops. We hope that we can cultivate a spirit of lifelong learning in our students through such activities.”
