Our SAS colleagues have successfully trialled the cultivation of fish cells using a plant-derived growth medium.

The project, which won a Gold at the MOE Innergy Award 2022, was also supported by the A*STAR 1st Alternative Proteins Seed Grant.

Lead specialist Mark Richards and senior specialist Phoon Chee Wee has been working with local cellular agriculture company, Umami Meats, to improve the production process.

From hydroponically grown greens to cultivated meat (aka lab-grown meat), food technology has come a long way. And as a nation that imports over 90% of its food supply, it is no surprise that Singapore is driving the development of food tech – in particular, cell-based agriculture or growing meat – to strengthen food security.
