About this course

Course objectives

This training has been co-designed and developed in partnership with the Social Service Institute (SSI). This training equips first-time managers with essential leadership and management skills to navigate the challenges of their new roles. Through interactive discussions, real-world case studies, and experiential exercises, participants will gain practical skills to empower teams, foster collaboration, and drive sustainable organisational success. The training focuses on fostering a strong team culture, promoting vision and purpose, and building a future-directed, resilient organisation by integrating long-term, holistic strategies. Core management topics such as strategic planning, people development, problem-solving, collaboration, and performance management will be covered. Participants will learn how to analyse their environments, develop actionable plans, implement strategies, nurture talent, and manage relationships effectively. By the end of the training, participants will gain greater confidence and be better prepared with the strategic mindset and leadership capabilities to inspire teams, align efforts with organisational goals, and contribute towards a high-performing, future-ready organisation.

Course description

Upon successful completion of the course, the participants will be able to:1. Identify strategies to create a cohesive and collaborative team culture that values open communication, trust and mutual respect.2. Align team efforts with broader organisational goals to rally teams around a shared vision and purpose, at varying points of organisation growth. 3. Translate overarching goals into clear, actionable messages that inspire and motivate staff.4. Support staff in identifying and leveraging their strengths to enhance individual and team performance.5. Encourage behaviours and practices that promote effective problem-solving approaches and continuous improvement among staff.6. Recognise the importance of regular staff engagement to build positive work relationships and organisational resilience.7. Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on one’s leadership and management styles for greater effectiveness.

Target audiences

This workshop is designed for social service practitioners who are first-time managers leading a team or a group of staff, or newly-appointed reporting officers with at least one direct report.
