Development of Vaccines for Farmed Fish

Our scientists developed vaccines for farmed fish with the objective of supporting the sustainability of our local seafood production. The vaccines fight diseases caused by bacteria, reduce fish mortality, and aid the increase in fish production – so that, in the future, Singapore can be self-sufficient in fish supply.

The team developed methods to rapidly isolate, identify and develop prototype autogenous vaccines which are effective in protecting fish stock from deadly bacterial and viral infections. They also developed strategies to upscale vaccine production.

In addition, the team explored the use of nanomaterials to effectively deliver vaccines into fish fry. This new vaccination approach significantly simplifies the inoculation process: Currently, this involves laboriously injecting individual fish fingerlings.
