Passion in Documentary Filmmaking

Embarking on a #Project602 campaign, our alumnus Ong Kah Jing, better known as OKJ, was back to NYP on 31 July and 1 August 2023 with his Pop-up cinema-booth to share his latest experiential documentary film. The campaign took OKJ across Singapore to garner support for a one-night screening of his work at Singapore’s largest Dolby Atmos cinema before National Day!

Directed by OKJ, the documentary debuted at GVMax on 7 August 2023 to a full house! The 28-minute film took 17 months of research and captured the joy of four musicians playing music together for the first time in an emotional jamming session at a Chinese cultural shop. It was a ‘out of this world’ experience that the audience enjoyed immensely, feeling the music flow magically through four traditional instruments – Guzheng, Pipa, Dizi and Tabla.

OKJ graduated from NYP with the Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management and pursued a business degree at the National University of Singapore. He found what he was innately good at and worked hard to hone his skills in Documentary Storytelling. Check out his webpage for his past works that included a documentary that was screened at the ArtScience Museum and in Malaysia and Indonesia. The film titled ‘The Conservation Conversation’, won the 2017 National Youth Film Award for best film by a non-media student. OKJ was also invited to produce a film for Young Sustainable Impact (YSI) Global in Norway. Watch a preview of A Feeling of Music Playing on OKJ’s YouTube Channel.

We wish OKJ the very best in his documentary journey!
