Work-Study Certificate (Leading to Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics)

About the Course

The Work-Study Certificate (Leading to Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics) is a work-study programme designed to give fresh graduates from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) a head-start in careers in robotics and automation, especially in the manufacturing sector. It also provides them an opportunity to bridge the gap between what they have learned in ITE and what the industry requires of them in the workplace.

Through consultation with industry, the Work-Study Certificate is designed to equip students with relevant hands-on skillsets in the field of electrical & electronics principles, automation technology and product design.

What You'll Study

MC1: Modular Certificate in Electrical & Electronics Principles

Analogue Devices [30 hours]

This module covers the structures and characteristics of various analogue electronic devices. Students will learn how these electronic devices work and where they are commonly being used.

Basic Analogue Circuit & Applications [30 hours]

This module covers the basic analogue circuits and its applications. Students will learn how to analyse and design simple electronic circuits using diodes, transistors, and operational amplifiers.

AC Electrical Principles [30 hours]

This module equips students with the fundamental knowledge of AC electrical circuits containing resistances (R), inductances (L) and capacitances (C). Students learn to apply the relevant electrical principles pertaining to R, L and C. Other topics covered are electrical safety rules, measurements of basic electrical quantities with the standard analogue/digital measuring instruments, correct usage of common laboratory equipment.

DC Electrical Principles [30 hours]

This module equips students with the fundamental knowledge of DC electrical circuits containing resistances (R), inductances (L) and capacitances (C). Students learn to apply the relevant electrical principles pertaining to R, L and C. Other topics covered are electrical safety rules, measurements of basic electrical quantities with the standard analogue / digital measuring instruments, correct usage of common laboratory equipment.

Motion Control Applications

This module provides students with essential working principle of stepper and DC motor. Characteristics of shunt and series motor and its control techniques will be discussed. Students will learn positional control for stepper motor and servo DC motor.

Asynchronous Motor and Drives

This module provides students with essential knowledge of 3-phase power supply system, transformer basics and the types of asynchronous machines. The differences of squirrel-cage and wound rotor induction motors will be discussed. Students will learn the motor’s construction, operating principle, drive circuits and applications in automation systems.

MC2: Modular Certificate in Automation Technology

Fundamentals of Digital Electronics [30 hours]

This module introduces basic logic gates, which are the building block of any digital circuits. Students will learn to design digital circuits by combining logic gates, apply techniques to simplify combinational logic and realise a combinational logic, relating to real-world applications.

Digital Electronics Applications [30 hours]

This module covers the applications of digital circuit. Students will combine logic circuits with digital devices to create meaningful applications. In the process, students will understand the use of datasheet and learn simple interfacing.

Fundamentals of Automatic Control [30 hours]

This module equips students with the knowledge of pneumatics and electro-pneumatic control, sensors and their applications. Students will also learn to design basic pneumatics and electro-pneumatic circuits.

Programmable Logic Controller Programming [30 hours]

This module equips students with the knowledge of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and its applications. Students will develop PLC ladder programs using combinational and sequential logic control techniques to design an automation system.

Automatic Control Design & Application [30 hours]

This module provides students with essential skill-sets in installation and troubleshooting of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based system. Students will be equipped with the methods and techniques of troubleshooting a PLC-based system.

Industrial Automation and Control [30 hours]

This module equips students with the knowledge of Programmable Logic Control (PLC) using IEC61131-3 programming standard. Students will learn the different PLC languages and their applications.

MC3: Modular Certificate Product Design

Fundamentals of Project Management [30 hours]

This module introduces the fundamentals of project management and provides student with a good understanding of project management. The emphasis is on concepts, methods and skills that are needed for successful project management. A variety of project management processes for different phases of project life cycle will also be discussed.

Project Management: Challenges & Methods [30 hours]

This module introduces a practical approach to project management. Students will learn to use a variety of project management tools to effectively manage a project. These tools include the project charter template and project management plan template. Each part of the template will be explained and related with actual case study.

Mechatronics Product Design Fundamentals [30 hours]

This module provide students with a working knowledge ofa mechatronics product design cycle. Mechatronic products will be used as examples to illustrate the basic principles of designing a mechatronic product. A holistic approach is emphasised to achieve shorter design cycle and reliability.

Design for Automation [30 hours]

This module provides students with the essential working knowledge and skills to design a mechatronic product using computer-aided drafting software. Students will learn the factors that influence the ease of assembly and the know-hows to design for manufacturability.

Introduction to Human Factors Engineering [30 hours]

This module gives students an understanding of human factors needed for engineering design. The interaction process of humans with artefacts forms the basis of this module. This module discusses important issues such as human-machine-environment interaction, principles of good usability in design and the application of anthropometric data.

Ergonomics in Workplace Design [30 hours]

This module gives students an understanding of ergonomic approaches and considerations and how these can be applied in workplace designs. This module also discusses the interaction processes of human with the tools and equipment used in various workplace settings, and some important issues like recognizing and analysing workplace risk factors and development of controls.
