Specialist Diploma in Human Factors Engineering for Digital Workplace

NYP in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences (SUSS), have jointly developed a Specialist Diploma in Human Factors Engineering for Digital Workplace course by merging and integrating human factors sciences with engineering solutions. The Specialist Diploma is specially designed for practising engineers/system designers/assistant engineers or fresh graduates, with the aim to train professionals with the know-how and expertise in Human Factors Engineering to support the manufacturing, logistics and defence & security industries. Graduates from this Specialist Diploma will be given credit recognition by SUSS, should they choose to enrol on the relevant SUSS degree programme.

The 300-hour Specialist Diploma in Human Factors Engineering for Digital Workplace is modularised into two 150-hour Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs).

Participants who meet the assessment and attendance requirements for all the modules of a PDC will be awarded the respective Post-Diploma Certificate. Participants will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Human Factors Engineering for Digital Workplace upon successful completion of both PDCs.

Applicants are welcome to take 1 or more module(s) without enrolment to this Specialist Diploma.

Advanced Standing by SUSS

Graduates from this Specialist Diploma who satisfy the entry requirements of SUSS and have achieved minimum competency will be given credit recognition by SUSS should they choose to enrol in relevant SUSS degree programmes.

Post Diploma Certificate in Human Factors Engineering & Systems Design

PDC1: Post-Diploma Certificate in Human Factors Engineering & Systems Design

Focuses on equipping participants with knowledge of cognitive processes and approaches of human-centred systems design for best fit of user’s needs and task/system requirements. The course will utilise human modelling tools, hardware and software development platforms in the areas of IOTs, data acquisitions, instrumentation, data analytics, cloud computing & collaborative work environment for practice and project development.

Human Factors and Systems Design [30 hours]

Learn how human factors, including our strengths and limitations, play an important role in the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs and environments for productive, safe, comfortable and effective human use. Through this module, learners will be able to apply human sensory systems, physiological systems and cognitive processes to make effective recommendations to correct human factors deficiencies in existing human-machine workplace environment. They will be able to apply anthropometry and workspace design techniques to design and evaluate workplaces and interfaces. Learners will also be able to identify issues on accidents, human errors and design for safety in the workplace.

Workplace Evaluation and Design [30 hours]

A good workplace design has a positive effect on workers' satisfaction, health, safety, productivity and performance. Through this module, learners will be able to apply the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and principles of workstation design for assessing and designing jobs and workplaces. They will also be able to apply the knowledge of work postures, job requirements, work design and process improvement concepts and techniques to fit the workers’ needs and requirements and to reduce occupation induced risks.

Cognition and Information Processing [30 hours]

Designing artifacts, products and systems that improve human performance requires a good understanding of human information processing capabilities and limitations. Through this module, learners will understand several important areas in cognitive psychology. They will be able to apply perception, attention, memory, decision making and problem-solving cognitive processes to evaluate capabilities and limitations in human cognition and information processing. Learners will also be able to design artifacts, products, systems and services for improved human performance and safety.

Digital Human Modelling and Simulation [30 hours]

Digital human modelling and simulation tools are commonly used in the industry to perform ergonomics analyses for product design and enhance the efficiency and safety in the workplace. Through this module, learners will be able to use digital human modelling and simulation tools to design and evaluate products and analyse workplaces. They will be able to use digital human modelling simulation and with the incorporation of human factors principles to identify deficiencies in existing human-machine workplace environments, use human-centric design techniques to develop conceptual designs for ergonomic products and enhance the efficiency and safety in the workplace.

Human-Centric Workplace Design Project [30 hours]

Human-centric workplace design can support and create a healthy, happy, safe and productive workforce. Through this module, learners will be able to use human factors methodologies, digital tools and skills learnt in this course to undertake a real-life working project to deepen their knowledge in human factors engineering. They will be able to apply human factors principles and considerations to design human-centric systems and ergonomic products that prepares them to be Human Factors Engineering practitioners in their workplace.

Post Diploma Certificate in Human Factors Engineering & Applications

PDC2: Post-Diploma Certificate in Human Factors Engineering & Applications

Focuses on equipping the participants with knowledge of analysing complex work environments, cognitive requirements of work and fatigue management strategies for optimal human performance & systems safety within complex socio-technical systems. The course will utilise human modelling tools, hardware and software development platforms in the areas of IOTs, data acquisitions, instrumentation, data analytics, cloud computing & collaborative work environment for practice and project development.

Cognitive Systems Engineering [30 hours]

As technology advances, humans are required to work within complex systems environment with multiple interacting factors. Often decisions have to be made within compressed time and errors in decision making could lead to dire consequences. In this module, learners will gain the knowledge in human performance and system safety in complex socio-technical systems. They will also learn how interacting variables in complex systems affect decision making, work performance and workplace safety. They will be able to use human factors analysis tools to analyse complex work environments and evaluate cognitive requirements of work for making design decisions to ensure optimal performance.

Fatigue Management [30 hours]

Fatigue is mainly caused by lack of rest and sleep, and significantly impacts a worker’s ability to perform. Through this module, learners will develop the knowledge of human circadian rhythm and sleep cycle, impacts of sleep debt and causes of sleep loss. They will learn to conduct physical and cognitive tests to evaluate performance impact from fatigue. Learners will also be able to develop an effective fatigue management programme that assesses and manages risk factors such as work shift cycles, roster design, rest breaks and occupational exposure levels.

Human Factors in Digital Workplace [30 hours]

With the rapid advancement in technologies and Singapore’s push towards digitalisation, digital technologies such as industrial IoTs, data analytics, cloud computing and artificial intelligence are increasingly being adopted and deployed in the workplace. Through this module, learners will build knowledge and implementation skills of these digital technologies in advanced manufacturing, logistics environment and security systems. They will be able to apply human factors principles and considerations in the use of these digital technologies for human-centric workplace digitalisation and complex socio-technical system, targeted for industry 4.0 manufacturing, smart logistics and security systems.

Human-Centric Workplace Digitalisation Project [60 hours]

Human-centric workplace digitalisation can support and create optimal human performance, workplace processes and operations and systems safety within complex socio-technical systems. Through this module, learners will be able to use human factors methodologies, digital tools and skills learnt in this course to undertake a real-life working project to deepen their human factors engineering knowledge. They will be able to apply human factors principles and considerations to develop project prototypes in the context of Industry 4.0 that prepares them to be Human Factors Engineering practitioners in their workplace.
