About the Course

The Specialist Diploma in Robotics and Automation Systems Design aims to train and develop specialist manpower with the relevant know-how and expertise to enhance their career opportunities in the Robotics and Automation sector. This course is designed to broaden and deepen the skills and knowledge acquired in polytechnic and further prepare participants to meet the current and future requirements of the Robotics and Automation Industry.

Through consultation with industry, the Specialist Diploma in Robotics and Automation Systems Design is designed to equip students with advanced hands-on skillsets in the field of systems design, robotics and simulation, machine controls and communications, automation systems, automated machine design and the integration of robots with automation systems. Data analytics, artificial intelligence, and industrial internet of things are also introduced in the context of robotics and automation.

The proposed 300-hour Specialist Diploma in Robotics and Automation Systems Design is modularised into 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs). Each PDC is a 150-hour programme.

Participants who meet the assessment and attendance requirements of the two PDCs will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Robotics and Automation Systems Design.

PDC1: Post-Diploma Certificate in Robotics & Automation Systems

Automation Systems Design [45 hrs]

Automation systems are used in producing the majority of the world’s products. It involves the identification, analysis, and development of an automation system for a given set of criteria. Learners will be able to explain essential concepts and principles supporting the design process of robotic and automation systems. They will synthesise diverse engineering fundamentals including the use of robotic work cells, various types of layouts and Industry 4.0 considerations to design the systems.

Robotics Systems and Simulation [45 hrs]

Robots offer a flexible way to manufacture goods. Flexibility is required to keep pace with short product cycles. In this module, learners will be able to evaluate different types of robots and their applications as well as how they are programmed and commissioned. Learners will be able to classify, select and programme robots as well as identify different types of drives, sensors and control systems used in robots. Learners will use a simulation tool to programme a robot virtually before implementing it on a real robot.

System Networking [30 hrs]

Production processes are normally split into incremental steps and each step is performed by a machine. Communication between each of the steps is required to synchronize production. Such communication can be performed through system networking which involves the interconnection of machines for bidirectional data flow to relay both commands and performance data. In this module, learners will acquire knowledge and skills in communication systems and fieldbus technologies. Learners will learn to set up industrial fieldbus network systems to support Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for smart factory connectivity. They will also learn to implement cybersecurity to protect the networks.

Integrated-Work-Study Project in Automation Design and Integration [30 hrs]

This module provides learners the opportunity to undertake projects to apply their knowledge and skills learnt in the other modules. Learners will be involved in designing, integrating, programming, and commissioning a real-life robotic and automation project using modular automation units.

PDC2: Post-Diploma Certificate in Automated Machine Design

Machine Design with Simulation [30 hrs]

Production processes are split into incremental steps and each step is performed by an automated machine. Learners will be equipped with knowledge of mechanisms and peripherals that constitute these automated machines. They will learn to design machines using mechanisms including End-of-Arm-Tooling. They will be able to integrate the machines with peripherals and evaluate them via simulation.

Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence [30 hrs]

Data analytics and artificial intelligence are used in automation to enable machines to perform complex actions quickly and robustly, such as machine vision, as well as improve productivity. Learners will be introduced to various stages in the data analytics lifecycle and the components of an artificially intelligent (AI) system. Learners will also be able to perform descriptive analytics and simple predictive analytics using data analytics tools. They will also learn the methods of building and training neural networks.

Automation System Control [30 hrs]

An automated machine is a system of components that performs a production step. It has many parts that need to be coordinated. This coordination is achieved via designing, programming, and commissioning of a machine control system. Learners will be equipped with the knowledge of electro-pneumatics, input/output (I/O) devices, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and be able to construct GRAFCETs and control logic programmes. Learners will also learn to develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications for a smart factory solution.

Smart Sensors and IIoT Applications [30 hrs]

A multitude of traditional and emerging sensors are used in factory automation. Learners will learn the technologies to connect these sensors via the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to seamlessly collect and analyse data. Learners will be able to use cloud and blockchain technologies to store data. This will allow them to drive the implementation of IIoT for the next generation of smart factories to improve productivity.

Integrated-Work-Study Project in Automation Design Development [30 hrs]

This module provides learners the opportunity to define the requirements for an automation system that meet its intended purpose/objective. They will be able to create the design of an automation system using 3D CAD software.
