Gonna Be A Boss Someday
School of Design & Media

Koh Min Xiang says school was hard, he struggled with acquiring book knowledge. He reports his PSLE score was – in his own words – “dismal”.  He used doodling as an outlet when he kept failing at school. But from a coping mechanism, his art and design skills are today a source of pride as he tops his diploma course with a GPA of 3.95. Min Xiang also receives the following academic awards:

  • HP Innovation Award
  • Grandwork Interior Gold Medal
  • Grandwork Interior Award for Outstanding Project Work
  • Calyon Creativity Award

1.       Describe yourself in three words.

Determined. Hardworking. Creative.

2.       Why did you choose Industrial Design at NYP?

After graduating from ITE in Product Design, I knew I wanted to continue developing my design skills. I did some research. Among the design courses offered by five polys, only NYP’s Diploma in Industrial Design appealed to me as it offered a balanced curriculum.

3.       Who is your favourite lecturer?

Mr Khairul! He is a dedicated teacher, always willing to help his students. I remember my friends and I stayed in school till very late to complete a project. Mr Khairul was with us too. We were really touched by his care for us students.

4.       Tell us about your internship experience.

I was at Happy Walker, a company that deals with customised insole and orthopaedic footwear. It was an excellent opportunity to work on real-life issues. I was able to initiate and design footwear that caters to people with ankle ligament problems. It’s a great stepping stone for me to chase my dream of creating products that can help to improve lives.

5.       Where do you see yourself in ten years?

As a boss. Haha. But yes! I would like to have a design consultancy of my own. At the same time, I hope to be able to share my knowledge and experience with students as a lecturer. It’s my way of giving back to the institutions that have helped shape me into who I am today.
