Yong Kai Qi

Diploma in Information Technology

As a sec 4 student, she eavesdropped on her brother’s undergraduate online lesson on Java programming. Curiosity piqued; she researched the different diplomas that would give her a solid grounding in programming. And for her, NYP’s Diploma in Information Technology ticked all the boxes.

At NYP, she grew that curiosity and interest. She credits her lecturers for giving her a strong grounding and building her technical skills. She recently took the tests and has become a certified Cloud Practitioner for Amazon Web Services – all this even before she officially graduates.

Kai Qi scored a perfect GPA of 4.0, but this does not tell the full story of her multiple part-time jobs, community service stints and student competitions she participated in during this time. She takes on part-time jobs she can to help support her family, and yet makes sure she gives back to the community through service stints like facilitating a workshop to expose young children to technology during Google’s Bring Your Child to Work event.

Then, in 2019, she had the opportunity to head to Kazan, Russia to compete against other young IT software programmers. An administrative mix-up meant she had to deal with a programming language she wasn’t familiar with. Despite that, she kept a cool head, applied her basics, and still won herself a commendable Medallion of Excellence.

She still reckons the experience to be one of her best yet – despite the adversity, she was able to knuckle down and get things done. This has made her far more confident in her own abilities.

Kai Qi has received offers for Computer Science at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University and continues striving towards her dream job as a software developer.
