NYP’s dominance in the WorldSkills arena has been a constant source of pride for their students and staff.

The record speaks for itself: NYP has been a big winner at the local level WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) over the years. Just in the recent WSS 2016 held in July, NYP reaped 19 medals, and was the educational institution with the highest medal haul.

And in the international-level WorldSkills Competition (WSC), NYP has bagged two Albert Vidal Awards, 11 Golds, one Silver, five Bronzes and 22 Medallions for Excellence since it started participating in the competition in 1997.

The Albert Vidal award is the most prestigious award in the WSC. It is presented only to the most outstanding competitor with the highest score. Singapore won this award only twice and both times it was brought home by NYP’s School of Information Technology students – Viridis Liew in 2005 and Tan Thiam Shui in 2009.

What has contributed to NYP’s WorldSkills success? Said Mr Edward Ho, Deputy Principal/ Development and NYP’s WorldSkills Singapore Council member: “We can attribute our WorldSkills success to a number of factors. They include, a solid training programme to prepare our competitors for WSC, the dedication and support given by an entire NYP community comprising staff as experts, coaches, management and support teams.”

He added: “The most critical factor, is in our competitors. Their commitment to spend extra hours to train, their strong belief in themselves as well as in the coaching team in attaining mastery of their skills, their fighting spirit and their determination to overcome setbacks.”

Fazira Binte Zulkifli (left, in photo above), third-year Diploma in Nursing student and gold medallist for Health & Social Care for WSS 2016, pointed out that it was the nurturing NYP WorldSkills community which played a role in her success. “The training that I received has been invaluable to me. They have nurtured me to become a competent, confident and thinking nurse – a nurse who will provide quality care for my patients.”

For competitor Joan Chong, having a positive mindset and strong mental attitude had been instrumental to her success – traits she learnt from NYP. Joan was the first Singaporean to win the gold medal in the Graphic Design Technology category of the WSC in Calgary, Canada in 2009.

Recalled Joan: “One important lesson I learnt during my NYP training is to focus on the processes, not the results. I also learnt how to stay positive and to persevere. These are important traits which are still relevant to my work today,” said Joan, who works as a designer after pursuing a degree in Visual Communication at Nanyang Technological University.
