Course objectives

The course is targeted at laypersons who want to join the prehospital emergency care industry as Primary Care Paramedics. Learners who complete the diploma will also be able to apply for the Advanced Diploma in Paramedicine offered by SHSS to assume supervisory and leadership roles. They may also pursue a paramedicine degree in SUSS or overseas.The restructured Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedic Science features six Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs), totalling 990 hours, and 16 weeks of clinical placement. The following are the Post-Diploma Certificates under this course:1. Post-Diploma Certificate in Paramedic Foundational Practice (150 hrs)2. Post-Diploma Certificate in Prehospital Clinical Management ( (195 hrs) 3. Post-Diploma Certificate in Paramedic Leadership and Critical Care (150 hrs)4. Post-Diploma Certificate in Critical Prehospital Resuscitation and Care (165 hrs)5. Post-Diploma Certificate in Prehospital Care of Special Populations (165 hrs)6. Course description

The Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedic Science is designed for individuals who aspire to make a meaningful difference in high pressure, lifesaving environments. Learners are equipped to manage patients with traumatic injuries and acute medical conditions across the full continuum of care, from initial pre-hospital assessment and stabilisation to the delivery of definitive treatment. Learning is reinforced through clinical placement on the 995-ambulance, where learners apply their knowledge and skills in real world emergency settings under professional supervision.Beyond individual patient care, the programme prepares learners to respond effectively to critical incidents, building confidence in clinical decision making, team coordination, and organisational response from initial activation through recovery and post incident evaluation.Upon completion of the programme, learners will demonstrate the following course competencies:1 Manage the continuum of care for injured patients, from prehospital stabilisation at the scene to the provision of definitive treatment.2 Manage the continuum of care for patients with acute medical conditions, from initial presentation through to the provision of definitive treatment.3 Manage the continuum of response for organisations and teams facing critical incidents, from initial assessment and decision making through to recovery and post crisis evaluation.4 Uphold the highest standards of professional conduct and ethical decision making across all aspects of practice, from routine interactions to complex clinical and organisational dilemmas.
