Turning care into action through nutrition
My journey into Food Science and Nutrition has been both purposeful and deeply personal.
It began when my mother was diagnosed with a pre-diabetes condition during a health screening. Back then, as a secondary school student studying Food and Nutrition, I researched diabetic-friendly diets and created meal plans tailored to her condition. When her next blood test showed improvement, I observed first-hand how food could be more than nourishment; it could be medicine. That moment sparked my passion for nutrition and inspired me to pursue this path to help others the same way.
At NYP, I found an environment that empowered me to grow both academically and personally. As Chairperson of the Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyle (HEAL) Club, I led nutrition talks, community outreach booths, and social media campaigns promoting wellness, partnering with organisations like the Singapore Heart Foundation and Health Promotion Board. I also served as Head of Training and Leadership Development for the Ambassadorial Team and led the Peer Supporter Club in organising self-compassion workshops – roles that strengthened my leadership, communication, and empathy.
A key milestone was my six-month internship with the Clinical Research Unit at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. During this time, I co-developed a meal planning booklet for the Diabetes Remission Programme, which continues to be used in patient consultations today. It was incredibly meaningful to see my work making a difference in a clinical setting – an experience that solidified my goal of becoming a hospital-based dietitian.
I’ve since accepted an offer to read Dietetics and Nutrition at the Singapore Institute of Technology. NYP gave me the confidence to turn care into action, and I’m excited for the next stage of my journey in food science and nutrition.
