Metta Banking App: Empowering Special Needs Students with Financial Literacy
Financial literacy is a crucial life skill. With tailored guidance, students with special needs can confidently navigate real-world financial management.
Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Metta School have launched the Metta Banking App – a first-of-its-kind digital learning tool that provides students with a safe, structured environment to practice financial management.
The Metta Banking App is a pseudo-banking application designed to help special needs students practice financial literacy in a safe and controlled environment. By simulating real banking experiences, the app equips students with essential money-handling skills, ensuring they gain confidence and independence in managing their finances.
The app mimics real banking features, allowing students to register accounts and check balances. transfer funds and monitor transactions – all while learning about digital banking security through tokenised access. Available on both App Store and Google Play, this hands-on learning experience equips students with the skills they need to transition into more independent living.

Why Does it Matter?
📌 Bridging the Financial Literacy Gap
Special needs students often struggle with real-world financial management. This app offers them a safe, structured environment to practice handling money before stepping into actual financial transactions.
📌 Empowering Financial Independence
By integrating digital banking into the curriculum, students gain confidence in managing their finances, supporting Metta School’s mission of preparing them for independent living.
📌 Supporting Educators
With an administrative backend for bulk disbursements, account tracking, and payroll calculations
Teachers and administrators benefit from:
✅ More control over student financial activities
✅ A structured way to track progress and provide interventions
✅ Integrated reporting tools for better financial education
The app also boasts security features such as digital tokens and real-time alerts, and enhanced controls for monitoring and correcting student transactions.
With potential for scalability, the Metta Banking App lays the groundwork for future financial literacy tools that can be adapted for more schools and institutions supporting special needs education. Phase 2 of the project brings advanced features, including:
- Digital token setup for better security,
- Merchant transaction insights to track spending patterns,
- Individual-level upload and correction functionalities, and
- Advanced transaction download options for reporting
At Metta School, students have started to better understand financial concepts with the game-changing app.
Lum Kwai Yeow, Vice-Principal of Metta School, said:
"The app has made learning (Financial Literacy) for our students more authentic. This is especially critical for our students as they have mild intellectual disability but yet will likely be involved in open employment upon graduation (when they would be earning their own income). Learning outcomes will be stronger if what they learn in school today is closer to what they will eventually face when they navigate their "adult world" in future."
