Seven alumni and three current students from the Diploma in Social Sciences (Social Work) received the Social Service Award / Scholarships from Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung at the Social Service Institute (SSI) Graduation and Awards Ceremony 2016 held last week.

The awards and scholarships were given out by SSI to students who are pursuing a social work diploma or degree programme, have a passion to serve in the sector and are committed to work with people in the community. As the nexus of the social service ecosystem, SSI works closely with National Council of Social Services to understand the development needs of the workforce in this sector.

Scholarship recipient Michelle Vong Sze Ping, who graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic this year and is now pursuing her degree in social work at the National University of Singapore, said: "A belief that I hold true is that 'I cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good I can do'. To me, what better way to do good than be a social worker. With the scholarship, I'm able to take on cross-faculty modules and experience groundwork from field placements, thus giving me the opportunities to learn diverse skills and meet people from different sections of the society."
