EAE Tips: Applied Chemistry (C45)

Ideal applicant

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Interest in chemistry and laboratory work, especially in pursuing a career in the chemical industry;
  • Experience in a school environment (e.g. through a CCA or projects) where you learned about chemistry and/or its possible applications; or in an external context (e.g. chemistry/science-related learning journeys or online learning sites for chemistry topics); and,
  • Logical and quick thinking abilities, an eye for detail, as well as demonstration of teamwork, leadership and analytical skills to develop innovative and creative solutions in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.

Shortlisted applicants will be assessed as follows:


If you are shortlisted, you will be invited for an interview to share more about your passion for the course with a panel of interviewers. You will be assessed on your interest, aptitude, as well as your achievements in both chemistry/science and non-science domains. The duration of the individual interview will be about 15 minutes.

Some questions which you may be asked during the interview include:

  • What makes you interested in chemistry?
  • What is your career aspiration and how does the course help you fulfil it?
  • What motivates you about a career in a chemistry-related industry?
  • Have you taken part in any events/competitions that are chemistry/science-related?
  • How do you prepare solutions in the laboratory?
  • Given an experimental setup, are you able to identify errors in the setup?
Portfolio (Optional)

You should include in your portfolio any evidence and/or activities(e.g. chemistry/science-related events or competitions) that showcase your character and involvement relevant to chemistry (such as analytical and critical thinking skills). 


Examples of what to include in your portfolio:

  • Testimonials 
  • Certificates (e.g. academic, achievement and/or personal development)
  • Awards or participation in chemistry/science-related competitions, both at school or national level
  • Evidence of chemistry/science-related projects (e.g. coursework or CCA)
  • Relevant learning journeys or Applied Learning Module (ApLM, formerly known as Advanced Elective Modules [AEM])
  • Evidence of leadership activities or roles
  • Participation in both chemistry/science-related and non-science-related CCAs
