1. Congratulations on your latest promotion to Senior Staff Nurse! Share with us how you feel about your journey thus far.
Thank you! It’s been a challenging but rewarding journey. Looking back, the Diploma in Nursing at NYP laid my foundation in communication, empathy, and teamwork. It gave me a solid footing in both nursing knowledge and patient care, which helped me transit smoothly into the workforce.
Toward the end of my diploma education at NYP, I struggled a lot with self-doubt. I started to question if I had what it took to be a good nurse. The responsibility felt overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to live up to expectations. Thankfully, I had strong support from my lecturers, clinical instructors, family, and friends. Their guidance helped me gain confidence gradually.
I still remember how intense it was to manage a heavier patient load during my first full-time nursing role, but NYP had prepared me well to think critically and stay calm under pressure. In fact, my time at NYP shaped the way I care for patients and support my colleagues. I'm excited to keep growing in this profession, especially towards the management pathway.
2. You’ve come so far since starting your nursing education at ITE East. Would you recommend prospective students to enroll in NYP’s Diploma in Nursing?
Definitely! NYP’s Diploma in Nursing builds on the strong clinical foundation ITE students already have. It deepens your understanding of patient care through theory, evidence-based learning, and clinical reasoning.
To anyone considering the course, I’d say: go for it and give it your all. Make the most of every learning opportunity, whether it’s in class or during clinicals. Reach out to your peers, lecturers, or clinical instructors when you need help. Nursing is a journey, and no one expects you to be perfect. Every setback is a chance to grow and learn. Stay curious, stay humble - nursing is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. If you're motivated, the possibilities are endless.
3. What made you decide to specialise in Orthopaedics?
During my clinical rotations in NYP, I was fascinated by the anatomy, precision, and how patients could regain mobility and independence after surgery. Orthopaedics is a field where nursing goes beyond routine care. It is more than just ‘fixing bones’ - it's restorative, hands-on, and deeply impactful. You manage complex conditions, collaborate across disciplines, and learn specialised techniques like casting.
The satisfaction of helping someone walk again or recover from major surgery is also incredibly rewarding.
By consistently delivering high-quality care, maintain professionalism, and embracing every learning opportunity, I’ve been able to grow steadily in my career – culminating in my current role as Senior Staff Nurse.
4. What are your plans ahead?
I hope to lead and support nursing teams, contribute to system improvements, and mentor younger nurses, just like how I was guided when I first started. For me, leadership provides an opportunity to influence workflows, culture, and training. And that's something I find very fulfilling.
Nursing offers countless life lessons if you remain open to learning.
Each patient interaction is an opportunity for growth, both professionally and personally. You’ll gain invaluable skills in communication, empathy, and resilience that extend beyond the workplace. If you approach this journey with curiosity and a willingness to evolve, you’ll find nursing not only enriches your career but also shapes you as an individual.
Nursing will reward you more than you can ever give through caring for others. Do not be afraid to commit wholeheartedly if a fulfilling career is what you seek.
