Once again, Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) made its mark in the 10th Splash Awards 2016 with its haul of several wins - Best Mobile Game Award, 1st Runner-up and Merit awards in the tertiary category. Organised by the Singapore Computer Society (SCS), this is an annual national Infocomm competition for students ranging from secondary schools to tertiary institutions.
Working on the theme "Cyber Wellness", all teams had to develop creative mobile apps or games to help combat cyber bullying or game addiction. Three teams from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) made it to the final round.
Team iCreative, with two students from the School of Information Technology (SIT), clinched the 1st runner up prize with their mobile app, Emotion Buddy. The app uses artificial intelligence from IBM Watson to help users to self-manage their emotional wellness. Team leader, Vinleon Koh hopes he can use this experience to jump start his entrepreneurship aspiration.
The School of Interactive and Digital Media (SIDM) sent two teams - Pla.Net and CyberSmarty. Pla.Net, comprising three overseas students and three local students from the diplomas in Animation, Digital Game Art & Design and Game Development & Technology, clinched the Best Mobile Game Award and a Merit Prize in the Overall category award for their creation of a game for kids 10 - 12 years old to learn about cyber wellness. Team CyberSmarty, a single-member team from the Diploma in Game Development & Technology, won a Merit Award for an interactive visual learning platform that is fitted with two games.
NYP also took the Top Performing School Award for the second year running. This award is given to the institution with the most number of teams in the finals.
