Published on 28 Aug 2019
NYP competitors proved their mettle on the world’s stage, by winning two gold medals for Singapore at the 45th WorldSkills Competition (WSC) held in Kazan, Russia from 22 to 27 August 2019 . The WSC is a prestigious biennial global skills competition which is dubbed as the “Youth Olympics of Skills.”
The gold medals were won by Tan Ying Ying for 3D Digital Game Art and Regina Chia Yi Yun for Health and Social Care. Ying Ying and Regina are from NYP’s Digital Game Art & Design and Nursing courses respectively.Ying Ying also won the Best of Nation award, which is presented to the highest scorer of each country.
Our gold medallists overcame strong competitors to secure their wins. For example, Ying Ying beat powerhouses such as China, Russia and Korea. Regina emerged champion despite intense competition from 18 other countries taking part.
Besides the two gold winners, all other NYP competitors who represented Singapore also contributed to our nation’s haul by bagging Medallions for Excellence in the 12 skills areas they competed in. The Medallion for Excellence is awarded to competitors who attained at least 700 out of 800 points in their skills areas.
Overall, the 32-strong Singapore team won two golds, one silver, two bronzes, and 17 Medallions for Excellence.
Our competitors were up against more than 1,300 competitors from 63 countries competing in 56 skills areas in Kazan.
