Former gymnast Lim Heem Wei, our Sport & Wellness Management graduate, has been appointed Chef de Mission to Team Singapore for the next Commonwealth Games. Heem Wei has had an illustrious career in artistic gymnastics. She was the first Singaporean gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2012. She has also won various medals in competitions, including gold medals at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and a silver medal in the women’s gymnastics balance beam at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Heem Wei joined NYP in 2007, before pursuing her studies in Business Administration in NUS. Outside her sporting career, she started her own gymnastics school, worked on management projects before becoming a national coach to the Singapore women’s artistic gymnastics team. She also holds an international judging accreditation and has judged competitions such as the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup.

She recalls her NYP days fondly and still keeps in touch with her lecturers and friends during alumni gatherings. Heem Wei shares that that NYP has given her the support she needed to pursue her gymnastic dreams, by helping her balance her studies and competition: “Looking back, I’m really grateful for my lecturers, especially Mr Lionel Teo. My lecturers accommodated my competition schedules, while giving me the support to catch up with lessons that I missed when I returned from competitions. Without this support during my earlier years as a gymnast, I wouldn’t have been able to train so consistently.”

Heem Wei also found project works in NYP invaluable: “I learnt how to work together as a team to get projects done. I also learnt how to give criticism in a constructive way. All these are useful skills which are also applicable now at my workplace.”

In her role as Chef de Mission, Heem Wei will be drawing from her past experience as Assistant Chef de Mission at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to perform her role well.
