The NYP team who advanced to the global finals of the Huawei ICT Competition has won second place in the final leg of the tournament. They were tied with six other teams from China and Africa.

Students Edison Choo (3rd year) and Holden Han (2nd year) from the Diploma in Information Technology (School of IT), and Lee Zi Xiang (3rd year) from the Diploma in Infocomm & Media Engineering (School of Engineering) have been hard at work since April, gearing up for the finals.

Working with their lecturers, they sharpened their ICT skills through courses, before going up against 37 other teams across the globe competing in the Cloud track.

Zi Xiang shares: “Our team decided to simply enjoy the experience of being in the finals of such a large-scale competition. Without the pressure of expectations, we somehow focused better. In fact, my teammates got really excited and gung-ho about completing the tasks.”

The competition, which put students' theoretical knowledge and hands-on ICT skills to the test, was a gruelling eight-hour practical session.

Adds Zi Xiang: “I think many teams may have been fooled into thinking that they had plenty of time, but the tasks were very complex – more complex than those we encountered at the regional finals. Our team was slow and steady, and we were able to split the tasks efficiently among ourselves.”
