Our Culinary Arts students took home eight awards at the recent Food&HotelAsia (FHA) Culinary Challenge. Students from our Diploma in Food & Beverage Business who clinched individual and team awards were up against 250 individual participants and 48 teams – including participants from IHLs, as well as local and international chefs. Many of the participants had prior competition experiences in their own countries. All culinary talents got to display their mastery skills and compete with talents from around the world. For the Individual Challenge, participants had to prepare and present a dish within 45 minutes, while teams in the Apprentice Team Challenge had to prepare two dishes within 60 minutes - they were also given a mystery protein on site and had to be quick to think on their feet.

NYP was awarded the Best Apprentice Team of the year with two-gold medal wins and having scored the highest points. Both teams impressed the panel of judges with their perfect doneness of the mystery protein (which turned out to be beef), nicely seasoned sauce and garnishes, good teamwork, and cleanliness.  In preparation for this competition, our students trained for many days under meticulous coaching and guidance by SAS lead competition Chef Daisy Cheong, together with Chef Nicholas Low, Ryan Goh, Brenda Chew, Tammy Fan and Jimmy Chok. Our students walked away with medals and certificates, including accreditation by a panel of internationally acclaimed judges recognised by the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WorldChefs).

Says student Yeen Jing Hao: “I enjoyed the whole experience! This is my first time joining a culinary competition, so I was a little nervous. But we did our best. Our chefs told us that winning a medal is secondary. We just need to do your best and have fun learning.”

In addition to the culinary challenge, our lecturers and NYP-ACI Chef-Trainers also put in a full day of talks, demos and tastings and equipped F&B practitioners with knowledge and skills to up their game. Food&HotelAsia (FHA) Food & Beverage 2022 is Asia’s largest food & drinks trade event that brings together the global food and hospitality community.
