Successful Alumni is the Secret to Nanyang Polytechnic’s Success at Nurturing Digital Media Talent
Published on 05 May 2017

Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)’s School of Interactive & Digital Media (SIDM) has played a key role towards Singapore as a regional hub for interactive and digital media. As the first polytechnic in Singapore to offer diploma courses in Animation, Digital Game Art & Design, Digital Visual Effects, Game Development & Technology, Interaction Design and Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design, NYP students have gone on to become leaders and entrepreneurs in the industry. Their works can be seen in National Day Parades, National Day Rallies, and television series. Recently, Rolls Royce Motor Cars announced that it plans to roll out VR showcases developed by NYP’s SIDM students to showrooms all over Asia-Pacific.

You may also be interested in the strong links between the alumni and the school. Not only do alumni return from Helsinki and New York for talks with students, many companies started by NYP alumni remain closely involved with the polytechnic. Together, they offer scholarships, enhanced internship programmes, job opportunities and industry projects to their juniors. They also give regular talks at the polytechnic, helping students and staff remain updated with the fast-paced industry. One such alumni company is Anomalyst Studio, helmed by Jed Tay and his wife, Sheng Min. Both are from NYP’s Diploma in Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design, where Jed graduated in the pioneer batch in 2010. The husband-and-wife team provide internships for NYP students, and also hire NYP graduates as full-time staff. Anomalyst Studio recently hired two NYP graduates under the new SkillsFuture Earn & Learn Programme (ELP) in digital media production. These alumni are contributing to the education and development of current NYP students, ensuring that the sector remains a vibrant and growing one with new blood that understands real-world operations.

We invite you to join us at the SIDM graduation ceremony on May 3, 2017, Wednesday, graced by Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry. She will be presenting the Nine Distinguished Awards to NYP’s top graduates. School of Engineering’s Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering graduand Eljer Chua is receiving the Lee Kuan Yew Award. The robotics fan has been involved in almost every robotics event that the school organised. He clinched the gold in Mechatronics at WorldSkills Singapore 2016, and will represent Singapore at the international finals in Abu Dhabi this October. Fellow Lee Kuan Yew Award recipient Ray Tan was from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences’ Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry. From almost being expelled from secondary school, Ray is now a Distinguished Award winner for his outstanding performance at NYP. Ray stepped out of his comfort zone and made the most out of all the opportunities NYP presented to him, including being a student leader in a Zumba dance workout.

Over 5,800 students will graduate from NYP’s 93 diplomas, specialist diplomas and advanced diplomas across its seven schools, in 15 graduation ceremonies from 2 to 8 May 2017. Graduates from NYP’s six other Schools - Business Management, Information Technology, Design, Engineering, Chemical & Life Sciences, and Health Sciences - will receive their diplomas at their respective graduation ceremonies.
