SIDM Students excelling at WorldSkills Singapore 2020
School of Design & Media

In spite of the ongoing pandemic, our students rose to the challenge and endeavoured in their training to hone their skills and performed spectacularly at the recent WorldSkills Singapore 2020 competition! The top competitors from WSS2020 will have the chance to represent Singapore in 2021 for the WorldSkills ASEAN & the international WorldSkils competition in Shanghai!⁣

Participating in the 3D Digital Game Art, Graphic Design Technology and Web Technologies, our students returned with 2 Golds, 2 Silvers, 2 Bronzes and a Medallion of Excellence!

In the 3D Digital Game Art Category, SIDM continued our winning streak with our students sweeping the top 3 awards for the category!

Our Digital Game Art & Design students Zoe Ow, Tan Jing Yi and Zoe Lim conceptualized and created a 3D Game Character of their own design based on the prescribed fantasy universe and eventually animating and bringing them to life in a game engine within just 22 hours over 3 days!

Zoe Ow and Tan Jing Yi both garnered the Gold medals and Zoe Lim clinched the Bronze medal for the 3D Digital Game Art.

"The competition has its stressful points, but it was overall a great experience. My lecturers were of great help. With their industry experiences, they have taught me efficient ways to approach my work," shares Zoe Ow, gold medallist for 3D Digital Game Art.

In the Graphic Design Technology category, our Animation Student Feliza Ng & recent Motion Graphics Design graduates Ong Wen Ting & Joanna Ong combined their skills in design, art, illustration, typography and publishing to create stunning graphical designs for both online and printed publications!

They had to ideate, plan, design and create the different products each day based on the given briefs. Understanding the target markets and swiftly creating the required products meeting the brief’s detailed specifications from start to completion in a challenging time-frame. 3 complete projects in 3 days!

Feliza emerged the top competitor with a Silver medal, Wen Ting was awarded a Bronze medal and Joanna clinched a Medallion of Excellence!

“The commitment required from competitors was indeed daunting at first, and I struggled to keep up with not only my coaches’ expectations, but also my expectations for myself. Despite these external and internal pressures, with the guidance and patience of my coaches, I was able to surpass these hurdles and have emerged a stronger individual, beyond the technicalities of the skill.” - shares Feliza Ng, Silver medallist for Graphic Design Technology.

In the Web Technologies category, our Interaction Design student Jordan Chan was put to the test - designing, creating wireframes followed by developing the frontend portion of the website and utilising content management systems to create a dynamic website, and finishing off with synchronizing the frontend with the backend databases. A speedtest segment tested his mastery of various skills and his ability to adapt and solve different questions within a short timeframe.

After a grueling 3 days of competition, Jordan was awarded the Silver medal for Web Technologies.

"The experience accelerated my growth as a student as well as a person. I am proud of how much I've grown throughout my time in Worldskills" - Jordan Chan, Silver Medalist for Web Technologies.

We would like to congratulate all our competitors who have put in their best in their training journey and not forgetting, our coaches who have been tirelessly training them as well as the organising teams and jury for making this competition amidst this trying situation a success!
