SDN students won two Merit Awards in two Categories in the Cities of Love Awards. The Cities of Love Awards honours individuals and businesses who demonstrate how we can live sustainably by acting with love toward our cities and making an impact for the community.

Fifteen students from the Diploma in Architecture won the Merit Award for Environmental Sustainability with the “COOP” project. “COOP” is an architecture kit-of-parts that empowers communities to build their own spatial interventions. It encourages people to gain ownership of making with the ease of construction assisted by advanced digital technology.

Twelve students from the Diploma in Visual Communication won the Merit Award for Social Sustainability for “Seeing the Obvious”. “Seeing the Obvious” is a mini carnival initiated by Let’s Go Play Outside!, a ground-up social art project by 3Pumpinks. It explores the potential of using art and design to enliven public space and empower the spirit of the community. Visual Communication students engaged with the residents of the housing precinct, inspiring one another to create a playful living environment in which residents across different socio-economic backgrounds and age groups, can enjoy together.

The awards were presented by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District at the Singapore Sustainability Academy on 27 April 2019.
