Offered in collaboration with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and supported by the National Pre-hospital Emergency care Training Committee (NPTC), this course aims to equip our learners with the knowledge and skills in emergency medical services and the roles of a paramedic. It will integrate core knowledge and skills to treat and manage the various trauma and medical emergencies according to clinical practice guidelines. Critical core skills such as communication, leadership and crisis management will be included to improve operational effectiveness and work efficiency.

This 12-month full time diploma conversion programme comprises six Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs) and four blocks of ambulance attachments with SCDF.

What You'll Study

Post Diploma Certificate 1: Essentials of Paramedic Practice

Module 1: Disorders of Musculoskeletal & Regulatory Systems & Infections (45 Hours)

This module introduces to the learners the concepts of health and disease. It provides learners with an understanding of the organization,structure and functions the integumentary and musculoskeletal systems. It enables learners to develop knowledge and skills in the prevention of communicable diseases.

Module 2: Communication and Ethics (60 Hours)

This module introduces learners to the medico-legal and ethical issues that have an impact on paramedic practice. Learners will also learn to communicate effectively and write well-written structured reports.

Module 3: Essential Skills in Pharmacotherapy (30 Hours)

This module provides learners with opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in drug administration and calculations. Learners will be able to integrate clinical reasoning and decision making to provide safe and competent care for patients in accordance with established drug protocols.

Module 4: Clinical Placement Supervision 1 (15 Hours)

This module provides opportunities for the learner to integrate theory and practice in the different settings encountered during their placement in the prehospital emergency medical service.

Post Diploma Certificate 2: Paramedical Management of Trauma Emergencies

Module 1: Physical Assessment and Injury Management (60 Hours)

The learners will develop skills and integrate critical thinking in the care of patients with airway, respiratory and circulatory emergencies.

Module 2: Occupational Wellbeing and Risk Management (30 Hours)

This module provides learners with knowledge on how to maintain occupational wellbeing and manage work risks encountered in the prehospital settings. Learners will have the opportunities to apply clinical reasoning and reflection to promote their paramedic practice.

Module 3: Management of Trauma Emergencies (60 Hours)

This module introduces the learners to develop skills and integrate critical thinking in providing care for patients with traumatic emergencies. Learners will learn to recognize and manage various life-threatening injuries and conditions.

Post Diploma Certificate 3: Paramedical Management of Cardiorespiratory

Module 1: Disorders of Cardiopulmonary & Endocrine Systems (60 Hours)

This module provides the learner with an understanding of the organization, structure, and functions of the circulatory, cardiorespiratory and endocrine system. Learners will be able link their knowledge with diseases affecting these organ systems.

Module 2: Management of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Emergencies (90 Hours)

This module provides learners with the opportunities to demonstrate progression in paramedic practice through the incorporation of the skills and integrate critical thinking in providing care for patients with cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. Learners will learn differential diagnoses and understand prehospital protocols used in managing such emergencies.

Post Diploma Certificate 4: Paramedical Management of Non-Cardiorespiratory Emergencies

Module 1: Disorders of Gastro, Renal & Neuro-Immune Systems (45 Hours)

This module continues the examination of the organization, structure and functions of body systems, such as nervous, gastrointestinal, urinary and immune systems. The pathophysiology related disorders relevant to paramedicine is also discussed.

Module 2: Pharmacotherapeutics in Paramedicine (30 Hours)

This module introduces the learner to the different categories of drugs used to manage patients in the prehospital emergency care settings. It will enable learners to apply their knowledge and develop precautions relating to drug use in paediatric, geriatric and pregnant patients.

Module 3: Management of Medical Emergencies (75 Hours)

This module provides learners with the opportunities to develop skills and integrate critical thinking in providing care for patients with medical emergencies including substance abuse and poisoning. Learners will learn differential diagnoses and understand prehospital protocols used in managing such emergencies.

Post Diploma Certificate 5: Paramedical Management of Special Populations

Module 1: Management of Obstetric and Gynaecological Emergencies (75 Hours)

This module introduces the learners to the care and management of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies in the prehospital setting. The learners will acquire the skills to assist in the delivery of a fetus in a prehospital setting and care for newborn baby, at the scene and during transportation to the hospital.

Module 2: Management of Paediatric Emergencies (45 Hours)

This module provides learners with the opportunities to develop skills and integrate critical thinking in the management of paediatric emergencies. Learners will learn to use a structured approach on triage and understand various prehospital protocols used in paediatric emergencies.

Module 3: Emergency Care of Geriatric Patients (15 Hours)

This module provides learners with the opportunities to develop skills and integrate critical thinking in managing geriatric emergencies. Learners will learn to recognize atypical disease presentation and their management in older adults.

Post Diploma Certificate 6: Paramedical Management of Special Incidents

Module 1: Clinical Placement Supervision 2 (15 Hours)

This module provides opportunities for the learner to display their professionalism and teamwork in prehospital settings. Learners will be able apply clinical reasoning and judgement to determine differential diagnoses and desired treatment plans.

Module 2: Management of Special Incidents (60 Hours)

This module provides opportunities for the learners to develop skills and critical thinking in the management of special incidents. Learners will gain knowledge about the organization and roles of leaders to manage such incidents in the prehospital settings.

Module 3: Management of Cardiac Arrest and Death (30 Hours)

This module provides opportunities for the learners to develop skills and integrate critical thinking in managing patients with cardiac arrest and death in the prehospital environment. Learners will be able to apply guidelines and protocols for managing such emergencies.

Module 4: Caring for Patients with Special Challenges (60 Hours)

This module provides opportunities for the learners to integrate theory and practice in providing care for a variety of patients with challenges in the prehospital emergency care setting. Learners will learn how to manage these patients with sensitivity and empathy in accordance with guidelines and protocols.

Certification

Participants will be required to complete all modules. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded the Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedic Sciences by Nanyang Polytechnic.
