Evolving from Athlete to Coach
School of Business Management

Diploma in Sports & Wellness Management, Year 3

I’ve always loved sports. Running, swimming, soccer, you name it – I was adept in them. But I wanted to be more than just a sporty kid. I was serious about having a career in sports (off and on the field). I even took PE as an O Levels subject! That’s why NYP’s Diploma in Sports and Wellness Management was the course for me.

Offering a balance between business management studies, sports science and coaching, the course has taught me a lot about the world of sports management. I never saw myself as a leader but studying in NYP has helped hone my leadership skills.

On the field, I’ve been given the opportunity to bond with my teammates at NYP Athletics Club. They've taught me many valuable lessons like perseverance and patience. I also came in fourth in my very first 400m individual race at the 2018/19 Poly-ITE games. While I didn’t clinch a medal, my seniors did the school proud by coming in first and third place. In the following year, the team came in third at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games. We were all proud of one another, as we knew how hard we worked for the win.

Seeing NYP’s strong athletics culture and numerous sporting accolades only confirms that choosing this diploma was right

When it comes to class work, I’ve led the team in the Sports Event Management module, where we worked closely with the Swimming and Shooting National Associations for event planning and marketing.

Right now, my leadership and project management skills are being put to test at my internship at Anytime Fitness, an international fitness company. A Year Two module gave me a solid foundation on gym planning and social media management. As part of the pioneer team for a new outlet, I have full backstage access to setting up the gym and business. From space planning and vendor management to pre-opening plans and post-opening customer service management, I’ve done it all.

Post-graduation, I have plans to further my studies in business and sports management, while continuing my pursuit for medals on the track.

NYP gave me the opportunity to grow into a leader. I’ll want to keep growing, whether on the track, or academically. To be the better form of myself.
