As an omnichannel design intern at Lotte Travel Retail, a major duty-free retailer with 19 stores across all four terminals at Changi Airport, I created key visuals and animations for multiple campaigns.

From the start, the pace was intense. Since travellers move quickly, Lotte Travel Retail's visuals need to be clear, bold, and instantly understood across digital screens and retail displays. Every project had a firm deadline, and every design needed to be delivered in formats ready for rollout.

Throughout my 12-week internship, I primarily worked with the Omnichannel Marketing team and occasionally supported their only full-time designer.

Seeing My Work Across Changi Airport

One of my earliest major projects started on the third day of my internship. I was to adapt the visual from Lotte Duty Free Singapore’s 5th Anniversary campaign on more than 40 different print and digital platforms, which would be displayed across all four terminals in Changi Airport.

In the process of refining the layout for different collaterals and rearranging text and design elements, my biggest challenge was to ensure that the message stayed consistent and readable in every size and layout.  Small alignment issues could become obvious once displayed publicly, so I learned to check everything more carefully than I ever did in school.

I also rearranged the design of other campaign collaterals and created the fifteen-dollar voucher for this campaign.

As these screens run on schedules and there was no guarantee that the designs would appear at the right time, Luthfil's supervisor specially arranged for these visuals to be displayed for Luthfil – so that he could capture them for his internship presentation.

Designing for Real Campaigns With Real Stakes

Another major project I worked on was a collab campaign between Visa and Lotte Duty Free. This collaboration mattered because Lotte Duty Free had been trying to secure the deal with Visa for a long time. I created layout options and supporting assets, adapted the visuals across different sizes, and compiled them into a deck for review; the layout that was eventually selected had a more corporate style to match the partner’s expectations.

This project taught me how serious real world design is. Small mistakes cause delays. Last-minute changes happen, and you still need to deliver quickly without losing quality. With this experience, I learnt to be more disciplined, more careful, and more professional in how I work.

Throughout my internship, my supervisors and colleagues cared about my learning, not just the deliverables – and 12 weeks flew by very quickly. Soon after, the next intern took over my role, and the handover felt smooth, like I had completed something meaningful.

This internship did not just teach me how to design faster. It showed me what it feels like when your work becomes real.
