Driven to Excel: Zie Sheng's Polytechnic Success & Award-Winning Internship
A testament to perseverance: Lee Zie Sheng's journey from a challenging academic start to polytechnic excellence and a high-impact, award-winning internship at Micron.

My academic journey began with success in my GCE O-levels, which led me to St. Andrew’s Junior College. There, I was deeply involved in the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), eventually rising to the role of Senior Cadet Inspector and organizing significant national-level events. While this commitment helped to develop and showcase my leadership and organizational skills, it inadvertently impacted my A-level results, which initially narrowed my university options.
However, my path took an inspiring turn after my National Service. Initially, I was drawn to Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Biomedical Engineering because of my interest in Chemistry, but a single semester revealed my deeper passion for the logic and creativity of computer programming. This led to a determined decision to transfer to Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) for a Diploma in Electronic & Computer Engineering, a move that proved transformative. I found myself doing really well at NYP, making the Director's List pretty consistently, and I also got involved in some of the technology competitions, which helped me develop my technical skills.
During my 6-month internship at Micron Semiconductor Asia Pte Ltd., I had the opportunity to further refine my skills. Tasked with "Driving AGV Improvements: Reducing Errors," I demonstrated technical and problem-solving abilities. My analysis and solutions contributed to operational improvements, including a 50% reduction in overall AGV alarm counts and savings in man-hours. My industry supervisor praised my performance, stating that I exceeded his expectations through my proactive approach, self-learning ability, and insightful questions. They also highlighted my teamwork, communication skills, and data analysis and troubleshooting abilities, which contributed to their projects. Before my internship ended, my supervisor shared his confidence in my future success.

Beyond the results at Micron, my learning of AGV responsibilities and my knowledge sharing through training and documentation earned me Micron’s Culture Champion Award for my positive impact on teamwork and innovation. As I myself reflected, my 24-week internship experience at Micron Technology provided me with invaluable opportunities to develop into a more confident and adaptable individual. Through involvement with AGV operations, I tackled numerous challenges and developed solutions which have earned me recognitions and award from the organization. My achievements in Micron would not have been possible without the guidance of my supervisor and also the interpersonal skills that I have obtained from my NYP diploma's teaching pedagogy. The diverse projects have strengthened my teamwork and enabled me to be a critical-thinker which have contributed to my success during the internship.
Looking back, my story shows that with perseverance and a passion for what you do, you can overcome challenges. My time at NYP, where I worked hard and learned a lot, led to valuable contributions during my Micron internship. I was also honored to receive the NYP Distinguished Award for Mitsubishi Electric – Engineering Practice Excellence Award, which recognized my academic performance, problem-solving skills, and internship contributions. I believe that my academic background and practical experience have given me a solid foundation for a promising future in the technology sector.
