For many SMEs, getting started on sustainability can be challenging. Beyond understanding what to report, companies need reliable data, clear governance and people within the organisation who know how to keep the effort going.

Through NYP360, Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) School of Business Management (SBM) and School of Applied Science (SAS) worked together with Scatech to strengthen these capabilities and support the development of the company’s inaugural Sustainability Report.

The Business Challenge

Scatech lacked the internal expertise and structured frameworks to undertake sustainability reporting and carbon measurement, including environmental data collection, identification of material sustainability topics, establishment of carbon emissions baselines and governance processes.

With sustainability forming part of the evaluation criteria for relevant government tenders, building these capabilities was important to maintaining its business competitiveness. Beyond producing a one-off sustainability report, Scatech needed to develop the internal knowledge, processes and tools to support ongoing sustainability reporting and monitoring.

The Solution

NYP brought together two complementary areas of expertise under a coordinated engagement.

SBM led the Sustainability Reporting Accelerator Programme (SRAP), guiding Scatech through five progressive phases towards developing its inaugural Sustainability Report. The work covered sustainability governance, stakeholder engagement, environmental and operational data collection, sustainability communication and the preparation of the final report.

At the same time, SAS delivered its Carbon Management Accelerator Programme (CMAP) to establish Scatech’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions baselines and identify material Scope 3 emissions categories.

Bringing both workstreams together meant that carbon measurement was not treated as a separate exercise. The findings could feed directly into Scatech’s sustainability reporting, giving the company a more integrated view of its sustainability performance while reducing duplication in the engagement.

As part of the project, SBM and SAS also jointly conducted a one-day workshop and mentorship session for five Scatech team members. The session covered sustainability fundamentals, sustainability reporting, stakeholder and material topic identification, carbon measurement, peer analysis, sustainability governance and communication strategies.

Scatech was also equipped with practical templates to support the ongoing tracking of electricity, water and fuel consumption.

The project extended into student learning as well. Fourteen SBM students from Diploma in Business Management participated across two rounds of the Teaching Enterprise Programme, supporting the development of Scatech’s professionally published Sustainability Report and applying what they had learnt to a real industry sustainability challenge.

Outcomes and Impact

Scatech successfully published its inaugural Sustainability Report, supported by a sustainability governance framework, Scope 1 and 2 emissions baselines, and the identification of material Scope 3 emissions categories. Five employees also gained practical knowledge and skills in sustainability reporting and carbon management, along with tools and templates to support ongoing monitoring and reporting.

The project also provided the SBM students with hands-on industry experience, contributing to the development of Scatech's Sustainability Report.

By bringing together SBM’s Sustainability Reporting Accelerator Programme (SRAP) and SAS’s Carbon Management Accelerator Programme (CMAP), NYP demonstrated how expertise across schools can deliver a more holistic sustainability solution for industry.

Building on this experience, the SRAP model has since been extended to Ergoworks Lifestyle Pte Ltd, demonstrating its potential for wider application among SMEs and opening opportunities for future cross-school collaborations.
