Smart Waste Management: A Step Toward Sustainability
NYP’s Engineering and IT schools teamed up with local SME Maxiton Engineering Asia to launch a smart waste management solution, boosting efficiency across industries like advanced manufacturing and food services.
By enhancing its refuse waste compactor platform with IoT-based, cloud-connected technology, Maxiton is enabling businesses to monitor and manage waste more efficiently, reducing both operational costs and environmental impact.
- The system integrates real-time data monitoring and visualisation through a plurality of IoT sensors placed on waste compactors.
- Besides monitoring the physical condition via pressure, temperature, etc, of the waste compactor to ensure optimal operating efficiency, the system tracks waste quantity in real-time and sends data to a cloud-based command control centre.
- The data is then analysed and displayed through an intuitive interface, providing businesses with actionable insights to improve waste management. This allows for optimised collection schedules, faster responses, and better waste tracking, ultimately making waste management smarter and more sustainable.
Key system features:
- IoT Sensors: Collect real-time data from waste compactors.
- Cloud Command Control: Centralized monitoring and data access from anywhere.
- Data Analytics & Visualisation: Helps businesses make informed decisions to optimise waste management.
Why Does it Matter?
This collaboration is crucial for several reasons:
- Environmental Impact: By improving waste monitoring and efficiency, the system helps reduce unnecessary waste, optimise resource use, and promote sustainability across industries.
- Operational Efficiency: The system automates key waste management tasks, making it easier to adjust operations in real time and improve overall productivity.
- New Market Opportunities: Maxiton's smart solution is expanding into new sectors such as leisure and entertainment, with high-profile clients like Gardens by the Bay, as well as venturing into international markets like Thailand.
The Maxiton-NYP partnership showcases a shared drive for sustainability through innovative waste management solutions. This collaboration gives NYP staff and students practical experience in IoT, cloud systems, and data analytics, enhancing NYP's role in advancing sustainability and tech innovation in today’s world.
