Tham Jun Heng, Javier

Diploma in Biologics & Process Technology

Javier shared about his journey and passion in building a career in the biologics industry with mothership.sg. He credited his lecturers for being friendly and supportive. During his time in NYP, he had a part-time role as a lab assistant at NUS Department of Biological Sciences and also interned at GSK working on vaccines. Javier is now working as a Research Technologist at the National Cancer Centre, while he waits to be enlisted into the national service. He has received an offer for the Chemistry and Biological Chemistry programme at NTU, and plans to pursue postgraduate studies one day.

Chua Yong Le, Eugene

Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry

We saw Eugene go through an amazing transformation over his past three years at NYP. He not only became the President of the NYP Current Affairs and Debating Club, and clinched the Bronze medal in the WorldSkills Singapore (Chemical Lab Technology), he was also the Bronze Medallist in his diploma course at graduation. Eugene shared: “I have become a version of myself that I am proud of. Find the courage you need to listen to yourself and fight for whatever you want.” 

Wong Kah Xuan

Diploma in Food Science & Nutrition

Kah Xuan joined NYP via the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) and, not only did she excel in her studies, she also took home the A*STAR Science Award. Recapping her three years at NYP, Kah Xuan says that she is exceptionally grateful for the support from SAS; especially during the times when she struggled to cope, due to dyslexia. As the diploma Gold medallist of class 2021, she would like to encourage her juniors: “Always have faith and believe in yourself. Despite the challenges ahead, take it slow and do not hesitate to seek help. With resilience and open-mindedness, you can uncover your potential!”

Sim Tang Zheng

Diploma in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Technology

Tang Zheng's jovial personality makes him a joy to work with. He has helped organised the Freshmen Orientation and the “Toy Buffet”, which saw over 3000 kids joining us for fun and games, before the pandemic. He also served as a student mentor, peer supporter and peer tutor to his course mates and juniors. During his final year of studies, Tang Zheng was attached to the R&D department at Dow Chemicals and, helped excel in projects relating to polymer and fire-retardant coatings.

Soh Pei Xuan

Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science

As an NYP scholar, Pei Xuan had many opportunities to give back to the community and, develop into an all-rounder student. During her internship, she worked at the pharmacies at both Seng Kang and Changi General Hospitals, where she took on duties of a pharmacy technician. She performed so well that she received the AstraZeneca Best Internship Award .

Chong Xuanru, Xania

Diploma in Biologics & Process Technology

“I was fortunate to have my internship at Takeda, one of the largest pharmaceutical company in Asia, where I got to experience the role of a Quality Control Analyst. During my 31-week internship, I conducted various raw material testing to ensure that the product manufactured are safe for patients. Best of all, I made new friends whom I still keep close contact with! NYP always makes me feel at home and, for that, I am forever grateful.” Moving forward, Xania will further her studies in Biomedical Science.

Dai Jia Hui

Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology
Recipient of Lee Kuan Yew Award 

Three years ago, Jiahui failed his O-Level English and did not get into the polytechnic course of his choice. But this did not stop him from putting his best foot forward and making the best out of his polytechnic education. During his three years in the Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology, he not only excelled in many national competitions such as the LKC Anatomy Challenge and Crystal Growing Competition, he was also the NYP German Club President. He also took part in the TFSCALE Program with Kasetsart University (Thailand), completed a six-month community project with Touch-Diabetes Singapore and, was a regular tutor for underprivileged primary school children. He graduated as the DMB Gold Medallist and also clinched the coveted Lee Kuan Yew Award. Jiahui hopes to pursue either a course in Environment Earth System Science or Life Science in the future.

Koh Jin Hao

Diploma in Chemical & Green Technology
Recipient of Ngee Ann Kong Si All Rounder Award

Koh Jin Hao was awarded the Ngee Ann Kong Si All-Rounder Award which was given to the most outstanding all-rounder graduate of the 2020 NYP graduating cohort. Hailing from the Normal (Academic) stream, Koh Jin Hao could identify with the struggles of academically weaker students. So for 4 straight semesters, he was the weekly peer tutor for a total of more than 20 juniors in SCL! He always strive to use creative methods during tutoring sessions and continued to help his tutees with their queries at night as well as in the weekends. Driven by a passion to help others, he was also the overall student leader for Toy Buffet 2019 as well as one of the student leaders whose team built a water distribution system for an orphanage in Bintan! As the Silver Medallist of the WorldSkills Singapore (Water Technology) and the DCGT Gold Medallist, Jin Hao graduated with a perfect GPA of 4.0 and was offered the NTU College Scholarship! He aspires to pursue a career in chemical/ environment engineering in the future!

Nurul Azlyn Bte Mohd Nor

Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry

Nurul Azlyn Bte Mohd Nor, a Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry student was attached to the NUS Department of Pharmacy, where she applied her knowledge on nanochemistry to solve medical challenges. The project involved making nanohydrogels and using them as an effective delivery mode for anti-bacterial medicine.  In recognition of her research efforts and confident presentation skills, she received the following awards:

  • Best Project Award at the Polytechnic Student Research Programme (PSRP) 2018
  • Oral Presentation Distinction Award at the Young Scientists’ Symposium 2018
  • Singapore National Institute of Chemistry Award for Outstanding Project Work (Graduation Award)
  • Calyon Creativity Award

Ridhuan was highly motivated to work hard in Poly as he is passionate about making chemicals and medicines. And although he's sponsored under the Joint Poly-SAF Diploma Scheme, he was humble and did not forget to pay it forward. As a peer tutor, he spent hours every week after school coaching junior students with ITE background. His overseas internship at Cardiff University was a life-changing experience for him as he forged new friendships with chemists from all over the world!
