Balancing Act: Rae's Winning Formula in Sports and Pharmaceuticals
Yang Qian Wen Rae (Class of 2024) is a recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science. She shares how she shaped her journey at NYP.

The Diploma in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Technology was my top pick during the Early Admissions Exercise as I was excited about manufacturing life-saving medicines. I chose NYP because of its nurturing and holistic environment, alongside the awesome and vibrant campus life.
True enough, the curriculum delivered practical knowledge and industry insights.
My internship in medical technology at A*STAR was an unexpected yet fulfilling experience. In this role, I discovered a newfound sense of skills application and creativity, contributing to numerous innovative ideas and experimental procedures. The experience showed me how my diploma knowledge empowers me to succeed in different fields within the larger biomedical and chemistry sectors.
Throughout my time at NYP, I also had the opportunity to demonstrate my leadership skills by serving in various roles within NYP’s Netball team. During my term, I also managed to guide the team to numerous victories, including historic champion titles in the Polytechnic-ITE (POL-ITE) Netball Tournaments and notable achievements in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Netball Tournament.
Beyond my contributions to netball, I excelled academically and was recognised for my achievements. I was awarded the A*STAR Science Award in consecutive years and consistently made it onto the Director's List.
My journey at NYP was not without its challenges. However, these experiences, alongside the support from my NYP family, have only strengthened my character, independence, and resilience. I understand firsthand the struggles students face and have dedicated my time to supporting my peers as a peer tutor.
Looking ahead, I aim to delve deeper into my passion for pharmaceuticals, taking on Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Nanyang Technological University with a scholarship. This is the next step in my academic journey, and I look forward to making a difference in the pharmaceutical industry.
