Energy and chemicals (E&C) are the two cornerstones of modern industry, driving key sectors such as petrochemicals, manufacturing & electronics, and the food and personal care industry. Vibrant and resilient, there are more than 63,000 E&C companies worldwide – of which 4,800 are startups.

Global chemical production is on the rise with strong growth potential, and Singapore is strategically positioned to benefit from this growth. As one of the world’s leading energy and chemical hubs, our nation has over 100 global chemical firms today. With a stronger focus on sustainability, this industry is evolving to improve energy consumption and efficiency, while meeting their targets for increasing global consumer demand.

In response to the pressures of a competitive economy and greater environmental responsibility, E&C companies are innovating and expanding their entrepreneurship plans. These companies provide ample opportunities for employees seeking further studies or career advancement.

Seah Yu Kai (Diploma in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Technology, Class of 2009) picked up essential chemical engineering fundamentals and skills through the course and while on internship at Siemens Water Technology.

This foundation eased him into his first employment as a Junior Process Technician, where he pursued an interest in EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) and developed his career as an Occupational Health and Safety Advisor in 11 years. In this process, the company also supported Yu Kai in completing his part-time Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety degree course at PSB University of Newcastle.

With the progress that Yu Kai has achieved, he successfully moved on to a new company as an executive in the Health, Safety, Security, and Environment department, where he infuses sustainability practices in petrochemical operations.

He shares that the industry requires constant upskilling, which challenges and encourages him to pursue his interests.

“Do not be limited by the scope of your diploma course, but seize every opportunity to learn. Pursue your interest whenever possible. I received opportunities to upskill and exercise autonomy in my career, which makes working in the oil and gas industry rewarding and fulfilling."
