Megane Wong’s turning point with the CSIT-Nanyang Scholarship

While the Dip. of Information Technology was not her first choice, Megane still excelled as a CSIT-Nanyang Scholar and is now studying at the National University of Singapore.

We heard that you enrolled in NYP via the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE). Was the Diploma in Information Technology your first choice?

My first choice was another NYP course — Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics. Nonetheless, it was a blessing to be accepted into my second choice, the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT)!

The diploma curriculum has a broad breadth of domains, which allowed me to explore my options and led me to reaffirm my passion for Cybersecurity. Having domain knowledge in other areas was also helpful such that I could expand my portfolio and improve my expertise.

I think I may not be where I am today if I took a different path. If I had not enrolled in DIT, I might not even have become a CSIT-Nanyang scholar.

NYP students enrolled in Information Technology diplomas are recommended by the school to CSIT for the unique CSIT-Nanyang Scholarship, and stand the highest chances to secure a polytechnic scholarship with CSIT.

What did you hope to achieve with the CSIT scholarship? Did you manage to attain your goals?

I hoped to learn more out of what was taught in school from CSIT! My internship with CSIT was eye-opening. I learnt a lot about the digital security industry, and discovered the wide range of roles that I have never heard of, but what’s amazing is every role plays an important part in keeping Singapore safe.

While I initially aspired to become a researcher, the internship broadened my perspective. I am now more open to exploring various career paths in IT and eager to see where this journey takes me. I believe I still have a long way to go — the IT industry is vast and constantly evolving. There’s always more to learn, and it's essential to stay agile, curious, and resourceful to keep up.

What are some of your greatest achievements during your time at NYP? How has both experiences been beneficial to you?

Besides receiving the CSIT-Nanyang Scholarship, I was also honoured to be selected for the Overseas Student Exchange Programme (OSEP). Under the OSEP, I studied at Dankook University (South Korea) in my second year at NYP.

OSEP really pulled me out of my comfort zone. I had to seriously level up my soft skills — from finding the courage to explore and ask questions, to talking with locals and navigating language barriers!

“This experience also made me realise that there’s so much more to life than just grades. There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored! Becoming a scholar pushed me to be adaptable, quick-witted, and resourceful — skills I’ve developed and come to rely on throughout the Overseas Student Exchange Programme (OSEP).”

Share one piece of advice you’d give to prospective students who want to follow a similar path.

Don’t be afraid of trying something new. In poly, you are the author of your own story. Go out there and try everything, try a new sport, attend an event, go for an immersion trip or test your skills at a competition. Find your calling and run towards it. You will never know how much it is out there unless you take the first step.
