NYP Top Graduate Launches AI-Powered Cybersecurity Start-Up While Maintaining Perfect GPA

Published on 02 May 2025

An overachiever since secondary school, Rohan Senthil was set on pursuing his passion in technology at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). He chose to secure a spot in NYP through the Early Admissions Exercise in 2021 and subsequently scored an O-level nett score of 3 points, the lowest possible for polytechnic admissions. Today, he continues his trailblazing feat at NYP, graduating top of his Class of 2025 cohort with a perfect 4.0 GPA, two Distinguished Awards, and co-founding Virage, a start-up leading the charge to fight voice message scams.

Rohan, along with seven other Distinguished Award recipients, graduated with some 430 students from the School of Applied Science today. Guest of Honour, Mr Ravinder Singh, the newly appointed Chairman of the NYP Board of Governors, addressed the graduands in an opening speech and presented the awards to the top graduates.

They are part of the larger 5,800-strong cohort comprising diploma, specialist diploma and advanced diploma graduates from the School of Business Management, School of Design & Media, School of Engineering, School of Health & Social Sciences and School of Information Technology. The respective graduation ceremonies for each School will be held from 02 to 09 May 2025.

Distinguished Award Winners

Nine Distinguished Awards were awarded to eight graduates across different schools this year, to give recognition for their outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities and contributions to the community throughout their stay at NYP. The full list of award winners is in Annex A.

Double Distinguished Award winner, Rohan Senthil, graduates from the Diploma in Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics with a GPA of 4.0. He received the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science, and the Ngee Ann Kongsi Award for All-Round Achievement for being the most outstanding diploma graduate at NYP. During his time at NYP, he co-founded Virage, an AI-powered vishing simulation platform designed to combat scams. Today, the team of seven core staff members work closely with government agencies and local communities to promote scam awareness.

Rohan expressed gratitude towards NYP, acknowledging the institute’s pivotal role in helping him achieve his aspirations. “NYP fuelled my passion for technology and cybersecurity through invaluable industry experiences and real-world applications. The guidance from my lecturers and support from peers were instrumental in bringing Virage from concept to reality. These achievements are just the beginning of my journey in leveraging tech for social good,” Rohan said.

Another Distinguished Award winner, Felicia Tue, discovered her passion for nutrition and dietetics in secondary school after she researched and developed meal plans for her mother, who was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. A marked improvement in her mother’s subsequent blood tests motivated Felicia to tap on the power of food as medicine. The top graduate from the Diploma in Food Science & Nutrition also bagged the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science for her excellent achievements.

“My early experience with nutrition and health at home planted the seed, but NYP nurtured it by equipping me with scientific knowledge and providing opportunities to apply knowledge into practice, turning my passion for nutrition into expertise,” said Felicia. She will be pursuing a degree in dietetics and nutrition, taking her one step closer to her goal of becoming a hospital-based dietitian.

Celebrating the achievements of this year's graduating class, Mr Russell Chan, Principal and CEO of NYP, said: “NYP equips our graduates with the skills and knowledge to become dynamic individuals that can navigate the everchanging world. Regardless of their chosen path to further their studies, or to clock industry experience before further upskilling, I am confident that their training at NYP has prepared them to make a real difference.”
