What My Overseas Internship in Information Technology at Shanghai Taught Me
In Shanghai, Joon Jun Han (Diploma in Information Technology, Class of 2026) discovered a new classroom that reshaped his perspective on learning beyond Singapore.

For three months, I was attached to Shanghai Minhang Polytechnic. I first worked on two key projects that exposed me to the application of technology in real industry settings:
- My first project was an Intelligent Warehouse Management system that focused on improving how goods are tracked, organised, and moved efficiently within a warehouse.
- The other was a Mixed Reality Go Kart experience that blended physical racing with digital elements to create a more immersive and interactive user experience.
These were not just learning exercises, but actual projects with real targets, pragmatic constraints, and people depending on the outcome. It forced me to think more clearly, work more responsibly, and take ownership of my work.

What stood out most was the working culture. Things moved fast, ideas were challenged openly, and teamwork was essential. I learned how to communicate better, not just technically, but as part of a team with different backgrounds and perspectives. Over time, I became more comfortable sharing ideas, receiving feedback, and adapting quickly when things did not go as planned. Those skills are hard to teach in class, but they came naturally through experience.
Outside of work, Shanghai pushed me in quieter but meaningful ways. Living independently in a new city made me more confident and self-aware. I learned how to navigate unfamiliar situations, solve problems on my own, and appreciate different ways of life. And honestly, I had a lot of fun doing it. Exploring the city, sharing meals with teammates, and experiencing everyday life there made the journey feel full and memorable.
The people I met were what truly made this experience special. From mentors who took the time to guide me, to teammates and friends who made long days enjoyable, these connections left a lasting impact on me. They showed me the value of learning from others and reminded me that growth often comes from the people around you.
Looking back, this overseas internship gave me more than skills or experience. It gave me clarity, confidence, and momentum. I came back knowing myself better and feeling more prepared for what is to come next.
As I'd like to share in mandarin: 走出去,才知道自己能走多远。上海这一段旅程,我会一直记得,而且它只是开始!(You have to get out there to know how far you can go. I will always remember this experience in Shanghai – which marks the beginning of a lot of possibilities!)
