Across borders, through design: Kristine Chua’s Global UX Journey
Kristine Chua (Class of 2017) recounts her path from Singapore to London – where she’s now Senior UI/UX designer at Deloitte Digital, a global creative consultancy agency.
I loved Art as a subject in secondary school. But fine arts was never the direction I wanted to pursue.
So, I took my teacher's recommendation to apply for a design course via the Direct Polytechnic Admission Exercise (DPA). My mother, a school principal, spurred me on – because she felt the curriculum and hands-on learning in polytechnic would suit me better.
Indeed, I was a good fit for the Diploma in Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design by the School of Design & Media.
Studies and project work were demanding, but they stimulated my passion and honed my skills. From animating graphics to producing multimedia for Singapore’s 51st National Day Parade, time flew by as I fully engaged in project after project.
Besides gaining all the soft skills and design techniques in NYP, I learnt to be independent during my 3-month internship with Carbon.tv in Hong Kong. It was my first overseas stint, and I didn't have my parents around as my safety net.

Achieving a GPA of 3.9, I graduated with a Diploma with Merit and received the Mediacorp Silver Medal. My parents attended my graduation ceremony at NYP in 2017.
With the skillsets I had, I tried to accumulate all the experience I could get. During my final year at NYP, I interned with Genisis Motion Design and produced for MTV Asia and Graphika Manila. After graduation, I joined Vividthree Productions as a full-time motion designer.
But I started thinking about venturing overseas during a career development programme to New York. I met tech giants like Spotify, and felt it would be interesting to work in a city like New York in future.
So I went to the University of the Arts, London, and completed a Bachelor of Arts (with honours) in Graphic Communication Design. While the COVID-19 period extended my years of study, it was during this time that I did various self-directed projects involving User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX).
While in London, I learnt that Deloitte Digital offered a graduate scheme, so I applied for it. I went through five rounds of interview spanning a few months. I was thrilled to be offered a job months before my graduation, and the chance to work in the UK.
Being a senior UI/UX designer is fulfilling, and while I love motion graphics design, I’ve shifted toward digital transformation in the Sports Industry. I find purpose in shaping business outcomes through a user-centred lens. I frequently engage with stakeholders and clients, and I want to deepen my involvement in shaping broader business directions and creating well-designed human-centred digital solutions.
London is a great place to be. It's a melting pot and has very diverse cultures. You gain new perspectives on things, and the English-speaking environment is great too.
As I look back on my journey, I realise that NYP has laid the foundation, giving me the skills and tools needed to go further. At NYP, I was also given many opportunities, including the chance to go overseas for an internship. In fact, it was my first internship in Hong Kong during my NYP days which made me realise that working overseas was a very real option and not something to be afraid of.
