How NYP shaped my journey in media and leadership
When I chose Mass Media Management at Nanyang Polytechnic via the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE), I was chasing more than a diploma. I wanted to find my voice and learn how to use it with purpose.
This diploma gave me the chance to explore both communications and business, and I quickly realised how powerful that combination could be. But what shaped me most wasn’t just what I learned in the classroom. It was the countless opportunities NYP gave me to lead, serve, and grow.
My five-month Teaching Enterprise Project was a major milestone. I led a team of seven fellow students in creating youth-focused content and worked on campaigns with partners like the National Heritage Board and the Asian Academy Creative Awards. It was fast-paced and there was high-pressure, but it taught me how to lead with clarity and how to bring a team together around a shared creative vision.
Outside the classroom, I threw myself into student life. From organising events like SBM Day and the new SBM Sports Day to leading initiatives like Leaders’ Quest at East Coast Park, I found joy in building community and creating shared experiences. Being a Tribe Leader in the Student Union and Secretary of SBM Club taught me how to manage people and processes well.
Community service has also been a big part of who I am. When I was helping to plan a carnival for youths with disabilities, I learnt how small, sincere actions can leave a lasting impact. And yes – basketball is still a big part of me. From secondary school to Pesta Sukan and MJ Cup, the court has always been where I learned discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
NYP helped me grow into someone who can speak up, step up, and follow through. I’m planning to pursue a degree in business management and one day, start a business that creates real social value.
