Where Robotics Meets Purpose
Joel Yong (Diploma in Robotics and Mechatronics, Class of 2026) describes his curiosity about how things work and his commitment to supporting others. He graduates with a perfect GPA, earning him the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science, and a place in Nanyang Technological University’s School of Engineering.
I have always been curious about how machines and systems work together to solve real-world problems. Choosing my diploma at NYP was clear. The course gave me a strong foundation across mechanical, electrical and programming disciplines, and prepared me for the fast-evolving field of automation and smart technologies. More importantly, it challenged me to think critically and apply concepts beyond the classroom.
Some of my most meaningful learning, however, came from helping others. One experience that stayed with me was supporting a classmate who was struggling academically. Over time, I saw his results improve, and more importantly, his confidence grew. His happiness and gratitude reminded me that small, consistent acts of support can make a real difference.
NYP also opened doors for me beyond Singapore. During my overseas internship at Eastern International University in Vietnam, I developed a smart system that enabled robots and machines to communicate and work together as a coordinated team. Building the system from scratch helped the organisation streamline operations and reduce costs, and the project earned me a nomination for the Mitsubishi Electric Engineering Practice Excellence Award Gold Medal.
Outside the classroom, I pursued my interests in photography and community service. I covered events supporting underprivileged youth with the NYP Photography Club, as well as healthcare-related projects and the migrant worker community in my own free time outside of school. These experiences allowed me to connect with people from different walks of life and reminded me why using my skills to contribute matters.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue robotics engineering at Nanyang Technological University. I hope to design automation systems that address real-world challenges while continuing to learn, grow and support those around me.
