What You'll Study

Year 1

Core Modules

Algebra [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the basic mathematical principles and tools necessary to build their engineering foundation. It will enable them to apply mathematical methods, tools and notations proficiently in the analysis and solution of engineering problems. Topics covered include mathematical functions (polynomials, exponential, logarithms, step functions and trigonometry), commonly used in engineering complex numbers, determinants, matrices and vectors.

Calculus [60 hours]

This foundation module provides learners with the essential knowledge in calculus. This module helps learners in building skills for solving engineering problems encountered in their course of study. Topics include differentiation and integration of commonly used functions in engineering applications.

Programming [60 hours]

The practice-oriented module introduces learners to software development methodology. The learners will learn about problem-analysis, problem-solving techniques and develop essential programming skills. The learners will be able to create flowcharts, develop algorithms, write structured programs, test and debug programs.

Electrical Principles [60 hours]

This module covers electrical fundamentals and their applications in electrical and electronic circuits. Topics covered include principles of electricity, power sources, resistive, capacitive and inductive circuits. Learners will need this knowledge to analyze, interpret and solve engineering problems.

Fundamentals of Mechanics [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the fundamentals of engineering mechanics. Topics covered include Newton laws, statics of rigid bodies, moment of inertia and bending moments. Fundamentals in dynamics that include kinematics and kinetics of particles will also covered in this module. Learners will acquire fundamental engineering competence to understand and perform engineering-related activities related to statics and dynamics.

Introduction to Engineering [60 hours]

This module introduces learners to different engineering disciplines by focusing on the application of relevant core engineering disciplines. Topics covered include roles and responsibilities of an engineer, ethics, and sustainability. Learners will engage in the practice of engineering through the process of conceiving, designing, and implementing solutions to engineering problems, individually and in teams. Through this, learners will also be able to hone their creative thinking and problem-solving skills, build synergistic teamwork and enhance their communication skills.

Engineering Drawing & Modelling [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the knowledge and skills to model the engineering parts and interpret drawings that are derived from the 3D models. Topics covered include orthographic projection, sectional views, assembly drawing, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. This module will provide learners with the necessary skills in communicating ideas and concepts through engineering drawings, which is one of the necessary and critical skills needed in the design process.

Materials Technology [60 hours]

This module covers the important properties and applications of engineering materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics. Learners are also exposed to various material properties tests and characterization, material processing methods and different material failure modes. This module serves as a foundation to enable learners to select appropriate materials for specific engineering applications.

Thermofluids [60 hours]

This module introduces the concepts of heat, fundamentals of thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Topics covered include temperature, heat capacities, latent heat, heat transfer and the ideal gas law, first laws of thermodynamics, the properties of fluids, the concepts and basic equations of fluid statics, and fluid flow. This module will enable learners to utilize their knowledge to analyse and solve problems relating to heat, heat transfer, ideal gases, fluid statics and fluids in motion.

Effective Communication Skills [30 hours]

Communicating well is a vital life skill, benefitting all aspects of our lives from professional life to social gatherings. It is thus important to be proficient in both written and oral communication. This module will enable learners to communicate effectively in different settings and on different collaborative platforms. There will be opportunities to practise and deliver various types of presentations, to learn to competently handle questions, and to effectively incorporate verbal and non-verbal elements when speaking. Learners will also acquire media and information literacy and be able to produce clearly written and well-structured reports and proposals, following standard citation and referencing guidelines.

Fundamentals of Innovation and Enterprise [30 hours]

Learners will develop attributes that are pervasive and synonymous with being innovative and enterprising for career and life. Through this module learners will develop positive practices when working with data, propose ideas using user-centric approaches and design processes, determine and locate resources, and leverage collaborative practices to formulate solutions.

Engineering Exploration Project [30 hours]

This module aims to develop learners’ innovative and enterprising skills while developing creative and technically robust solutions to real-world challenges. Learners will be able to effectively relate design thinking in the process of exploring innovative and enterprising solutions addressing the real needs that will bring about positive social change.

Note: The project will be contextualised to the Aerospace/Computer/Electronics (ACE) Engineering Track and Aerospace/Mechanical/Biomedical (AMB) Engineering Track respectively.

Workplace Digital Skills [30 hours]

This module enables learners to use word processing software to create, modify and style document/report effectively and efficiently. Learners will use spreadsheets to manage, organise and model data as well as to perform analysis and report generation. Creation of customised, dynamic and multimedia-style presentations using software tools will also be covered. Through hands-on practices, learners will gain these skills and apply them in project work in preparation for the digital workplace.

General Studies

To provide you an all-rounded education, NYP offers General Studies Modules (GSMs). So besides taking modules related directly to your chosen diploma course, you will get exposed to areas beyond your usual field of study. Through a combination of prescribed and elective inter-disciplinary GSMs, you will gain interesting, practical knowledge that can be beneficial to you as you prepare for the world of work and life after graduation.

Year 2

Core Modules

Differential Equations & Series [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the knowledge of solving ordinary differential equations and representing periodic functions in terms of Fourier series. The learners will be able to select and use appropriate models and techniques to solve engineering related problems. The main topics covered include first-order and second-order homogenous differential equations, Fourier series and its application.

Probability & Statistics [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the essential concepts of probability and statistics. The learners will be able to apply probability theory and statistics to analyse real life problems. The topics covered include the probability concepts, probability distributions (Binomial, Poisson and Normal), sampling distributions, estimating and testing of population mean, linear correlation and regression.

Engineering Mechanics [60 hours]

This module provides an overview of the various concepts of dynamics of particles and physical bodies. The learners will be able to analyse and utilise their knowledge to solve real-life problems related to engineering dynamics. The topics covered include Kinematics of Particles, Kinetics of Particles – Force and Acceleration, Kinematics of a Rigid Body and etc.

Integrated Product Lifecycle Management [60 Hours]

This module equips learners with basic knowledge and capabilities in the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies for the management of the entire life cycle of the product components and production. Topics include Introduction to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies and etc. and the emphasis will be placed on the digital integration of the design and manufacturing processes with PLM systems. The learners will be able to streamline and improve innovation across the product life cycle.

Quality Assurance [60 Hours]

This module aims to provide learners with the fundamental concepts in dimensional measurement and quality assurance systems. Topics covered include selection and proper use of precision measuring tools and equipment, which is the basis of inspection and quality control, and basic statistical tools such as sampling plans, control charts and process capability studies. Hands-on practice using measurement tools, including those with digitizing capabilities, is an integral part of the module. The learners will be able to perform measuring tasks effectively and understand how measurement data can be digitally processed and employed in data analytics for the monitoring of modern manufacturing systems.

Manufacturing Technologies [30 Hours]

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge of manufacturing technologies in two major areas, subtractive manufacturing and additive manufacturing. Topics include plastic process, metal process and other specialised material processes. The learners will be able to apply various types of manufacturing process for the fabrication of components.

Product Innovation with Design Thinking [60 Hours]

This module provides learners with essential knowledge of the product innovation process with design thinking approach. The learners will be able to apply the approach to ideate, test, run and complete product innovation projects. Topics include the concepts and to steps to drive design thinking, innovative ideas generation, identification of customer needs, and application of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools for design and development of components and products, prototype making, testing and product improvement through user feedback.

Smart Manufacturing Technology [60 hours]

This module equips learners with the knowledge on the application of various machining technologies and builds the foundation of manufacturing process planning & integration with smart machining technology. It covers the fundamental of Internet of Things (IoT) and programmable controllers for manufacturing data collection, application of AR/VR for the manufacturing environment, application of automation ad robotics, integration of processes with digital technologies to realize cyber physical systems for smart manufacturing. The learners will be able to apply the digital technologies for process integration and optimization of the machining conditions to enhance process efficiency with real time monitoring of machining performance for smart manufacturing solutions.

Communication and Personal Branding [30 hours]

In today’s competitive environment, a strong personal brand sets one apart from others. In this module, learners will develop techniques to impress and persuade others to accept their ideas. They will also learn how to communicate effectively over e-mail. To support their job search, learners will use digital portfolios to showcase their abilities, as well as gain the knowledge and skills to promote their capabilities in their cover letters and resumes. They will also acquire skills to project themselves positively and for performing well at interviews.

Manufacturing Information System [60 hours]

This module offers learners the fundamental concepts of manufacturing information systems in enterprise resource planning, production planning, simulation and control, shop floor monitoring and control, and their integration in the context of Industry 4.0. The learners will be able to identify and explain the key concepts of a manufacturing value chain from order entry to product dispatch both at the shop floor and enterprise levels. Topics covered include various established tools and techniques, and Information Technology (IT) systems such as manufacturing resource planning, production simulation, manufacturing execution system and distributed numerical control system used in a manufacturing enterprise.

Integrated Development Project 1 [60 hours]

This module aims to develop learners’ design conceptualization skills through the understanding of engineering drawings, fabrication of engineering components using basic manufacturing processes and performing in-process inspection on fabricated components. Learners will also be trained on project management skills to plan, execute, and monitor the progress of the project.

Integrated Development Project 2 [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with precision engineering related skills, such as fabrication of engineering components using advanced manufacturing processes and performing in-process inspection on fabricated components. Learners will also be trained on teamwork and communication skills to execute the project.

Year 3

Core Modules

Advanced Metrology & Quality Management [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the theory and applications of the latest advanced metrology and quality management. The learners will be able to measure products using advanced metrology equipment and apply quality management methods and techniques for continuous improvement in digital manufacturing. Topics covered includes international standards, measurement terminologies, measurement uncertainties, measuring errors, geometric dimensioning and tolerance symbols, coordinate measuring machine, assessment of surface roughness, form and roundness, and quality management system.

Integrated Development Project 3 [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with system integration techniques such as assembly of machined components into a smart functional engineering product using IoT devices and programming skills. Learners will also be trained on testing and demonstration of the integrated system.

Data Science, Analytics & Artificial Intelligence [30 hours]

This module equips learners with the knowledge and skills to process, analyse, visualize and manage data sets collected to gain insights to improve operational efficiency. Learners will gain an understanding of how to extract, transform and load data in the context of data management. Learners will also be able to use standard database management tools and techniques to present information in meaningful ways to discern important relationships. Topics covered include, key tools and methodologies used for analytics-based decision making, data science and statistical principles, and techniques in artificial intelligence for predictive analytics and performance optimisation.

Aerospace Manufacturing

Aerospace Material and NDT Technology [60 hours]

This module introduces learners to the types and properties of aerospace materials and non-destructive evaluation tools. Learners will be able to describe engineering materials and apply non-destructive evaluation methods used in the aerospace industry. Topics covered include the properties & application of aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, super alloys and composite materials; and the principles, applications and devices used for non-destructive testing in aerospace manufacturing industry.

Aerospace Manufacturing Processes [60 hours]

This module aims to develop learners with knowledge and hand-on skills on advanced machining processes such as high-speed machining, ultra-precision machining, multi-axis machining of free-form surfaces, and non-traditional machining processes for aerospace components manufacturing. Topics covered include toolpaths generation for multi-axis machine, machining processes and simulation for manufacturing.

Aerospace Manufacturing Specialization Project [60 hours]

This module aims to provides learners to apply the knowledge and skills gained from specialization of an aerospace manufacturing related context. The learners will be asked to look into different aspects of the aerospace activities, especially in the areas of aircraft component design/maintenance and its manufacturing processes. The learner will be trained with the understanding of aerospace practices and application in the aerospace industry.

Advanced Precision Manufacturing

Automation & Robotics in Advanced Manufacturing [60 Hours]

This module provides learners with the knowledge and skills of implementing automation and robotics technologies in the manufacturing industry. It covers the fundamental concept, system architecture, functionalities, benefits and application areas. Related software, electronic hardware components and sub-systems including programming and configuration skills and the implementation methodology of automation and robotics system will also be introduced. The smart factory concept is introduced to prepare learners for advanced manufacturing.

Advanced Precision Machining [60 Hours]

This module provides learners with the knowledge and skills in advanced machining processes such as high-speed machining, ultra-precision machining, multi-axis machining of free-form surfaces, and non-traditional machining processes. The learners will go through extensive practical sessions to generate NC tool paths for complex precision component manufacturing through the use of machining and simulation software packages.

Precision Manufacturing Specialization Project [60 hours]

This module aims to provide the opportunities for the learners to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the specialization of a precision manufacturing related context. The learners will be asked to look into aspects of the advanced manufacturing technology and processes. The learner will be trained with hand-on skills on machining processes for fabrication of precision engineering product.

Additive Manufacturing

Design for Additive Manufacturing [60 hours]

This module introduces learners to the fundamental principles, concepts and considerations of Design for Additive Manufacturing. Learners will be able to apply the Design for Additive Manufacturing methodology and techniques to generate optimized concept designs for additive manufacturing. Topic covered include optimization methods, simulation, analysis and topology optimization using various digital tools.

Additive Manufacturing Technology [60 hours]

This module provides learners with essential knowledge of Additive Manufacturing technology and processes. Learners will be able to identify and select appropriate Additive Manufacturing process and material for specific product, and handle the additive manufacturing processes for product development & manufacturing. Topics include concept of various Additive Manufacturing processes, their material and applications, and Additive Manufacturing Techniques such as rapid tooling. Application of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools in Additive Manufacturing and digital data processing for Additive Manufacturing is also introduced.

Additive Manufacturing Specialization Project [60 hours]

This module provides the opportunities for the learners to apply the knowledge and skills gained from previous programs to an additive manufacturing related context. The learners will be asked to look into different aspects of the additive manufacturing process, especially in the areas of design for additive manufacturing and its manufacturing processes. The module will help deepen the learners’ understanding of additive manufacturing technology and apply their skills in the industry.

Biomedical Manufacturing

Biomedical Device Design [60 hours]

This module equips the learners with the knowledge and skills to design and develop medical and assistive devices. It enables learners to apply their knowledge of engineering design and computer aided modelling skills to medical and assistive product design. Topics covered include the design methodology, computer-aided design, physical modelling and experimentation techniques.

Biomedical Manufacturing Technology [60 hours]

This module provides learners with essential knowledge of manufacturing technologies applicable for the biomedical manufacturing industry. Learners will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the biomedical and medical device manufacturing industries. Topics covered include cleanroom technology, micro engineering technology, distributed computer control system and automated manufacturing technology and processes.

Biomedical Manufacturing Specialization Project [60 hours]

This module provides the opportunities for the learners to apply the knowledge and skills gained from previous programs to a biomedical manufacturing related context. The learners will be asked to look into different aspects of the biomedical manufacturing technology, especially in the areas of device design and its manufacturing processes. The module will help deepen the learners’ understanding of biomedical practices and apply their skills in the industry.

Final-year students will also have the opportunity to undertake a full-time project and participate in a local or overseas internship programme for one full semester.
