Students from SBM took home the title of Grand Champions at the recent Maritime Case Summit 2022. They beat out teams from other local polytechnics and universities to clinch the top prize in one of the challenges.

The annual case competition organised by the Maritime Singapore Connect invites tertiary students to explore the intersection of business and sustainability in a dynamic maritime ecosystem. In this edition, students responded to challenge statements offered by four leading multi-national corporations in various industries – BHP (mining), CMA CGM (container shipping), Standard Chartered (financial services), and Toll Group (logistics).

The NYP team comprised Year Two students Dean Cheng, Shannon Foo, Gabriel Law and Jacob Lai from the Diploma in Business Management. They did well in the Toll Group challenge with their winning proposal to enhance sustainability and diversification of businesses. The proposal includes the use of special floor tiles and windows to harness kinetic and solar energy respectively for sustainability. Our students also recommended investing in renewable energy certificates, tapping on digital apps to improve staff communications and using solar-powered bots to clear trash found below the docks of Toll Group’s compounds.

SBM lecturer Keith Lum, who oversaw the students, had high praises for the team. He noted that they came up with many ideas independently. Toll Group also shared that it has plans to implement the proposal to its operations in 25 markets.

Student Shannon Foo shares: “I am very thankful for this opportunity, as we got to exchange ideas with fellow tertiary students and expand our network. It was also an eye-opening experience to present our ideas to industry leaders.”
