New school to work closely with industry partners to nurture future generation of Creatives that thrive in the intersections of Design, Technology & Business.

SINGAPORE, 21 September 2021 – Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) launched its new School of Design & Media (SDM) today. Formed from the merger of NYP’s former School of Design, and former School of Interactive & Digital Media, the new School will equip the next generation of creative professionals with the best interdisciplinary expertise.

The global creative industry and practice of design has been evolving rapidly. Today, a designer must be multi-disciplined – not only must he or she have excellent design skills, the practice often requires ability to apply innovative technologies to establish feasibility and appropriate business model to ensure viability.

The School answers these challenges and more. It is supported by an impressive faculty of experienced and award-winning visual storytellers, content creators, technologists, programmers, animators, game artists and service experience designers from around the world.

In addition, SDM also boasts state-of-the-art facilities for students and industry partners. These include Southeast Asia’s only PlayStation® games development and training centre for development of PlayStation® games, a motion graphics design studio where our students design graphics for large-scale events such as the National Day Parade, and an immersive media studio for students to enhance user experiences by leveraging technology such as virtual and augmented reality.

The new school will continue to enhance and deepen industry relations, building on the years of strategic partnerships with leading industry players, to equip our learners with knowledge on future trends in technology and new business models. Some of these industry partners include Ubisoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Industrial Light & Magic, Disney, Nickelodeon, Mediacorp Pte Ltd and many others, who enabled learners to stay updated with the latest practices and innovations within their industry. These partners also offer multiple opportunities for SDM students to work on real-life projects with the best minds in the industry, giving them an edge over their peers.

“We have been the pioneer educational institution in Singapore for animation, visual effects, games and service experience design. Today, as we launch the School of Design & Media, we would like to take a moment to appreciate the many partners who worked with us over the years, and to celebrate the many talented graduates we have groomed that are leaders in the creative, media and technology scene. With this launch, we look forward to continue offering a first-class curriculum to our learners, and more opportunities for our staff, learners and industry partners to deliver innovative solutions for the sector,” said Albert Lim, Director, School of Design & Media, Nanyang Polytechnic.

The launch of SDM was held virtually today, with Mediacorp Pte Ltd CEO Tham Loke Kheng officiating the session.
